Joy Division and New Order, two bands inextricably tied together, count as one nominee. The Rock Hall has done that before with Parliament-Funkadelic and The Small Faces/Faces.

The absolute locks are Missy Elliott and Willie Nelson. Lots of other ways this could go too.

IIRC, George Michael was named specifically by Taylor Hawkins as someone he wanted to see in the RRHOF during his Foo Fighters induction speech.

Interesting group again this year. Willie is a first ballot guy and a no brainer to me.

I was blown away when I visited the R&RHOF. I wasn’t sure what to expect but we spent hours in the places and could have spent more. Truly a bucket list item for any fan of music.

I used to think the annual limit was five, but I think seven got in last year. Joy Division/New Order long overdue (and first time nominees?!) - will be interesting to see who shows up if they get in; Peter Hook tours separately from the rest of the band and I don't think they get along well at all. I saw New Order last year and they were excellent.

In his biography ("I'll Sleep When I'm Dead: The Dirty Life and Times of Warren Zevon" written by ex-wife Crystal Zevon), it says that he did this tour without a band because he was broke and couldn't afford to pay anyone else. He was so drunk during the tour that he had no memory of it later in life.

Sober or not, it was an excellent show.

I’ve never really listened to Joy Division/New Order. Give me an album to listen to and I’ll give it a Spotify spin on my way to work next week.
My point with rage is that I’ve heard some talk about rap acts getting in because of their rebellion and “rock and roll attitude”. Can’t get much more rebellious than Rage.

They only put out two full length albums - Unknown Pleasures and Closer:

The other significant release of theirs is probably their most famous - the 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' non-album single:

Songs of importance are probably 'She's Lost Control', 'Transmission', 'Atmosphere', 'Dead Souls', 'The Eternal', and 'Ceremony' (last JD song written before Ian Curtis's suicide and officially released as the first New Order single). 'Joy Division' took their name from the female concentration camp prisoners forced into prostitution/sex slavery by Nazis.

I love their music but it's not for everyone; it's interesting that the remains of Joy Division - which is firmly in the post-punk/goth/new wave-ish space led to New Order's dance happy electronica/pop. Ian Curtis was an epileptic whose condition led to substance abuse and depression which ultimately led to his suicide.

I'd say their influence is what stands out most - in addition to their music, their aesthetic was also really different/important. Everyone from The Cure, to U2, to The Killers, to Smashing Pumpkins, NIN, Depeche Mode, Radiohead and Talking Heads. Not to mention all the bangers New Order released - Blue Monday, Bizarre Love Triangle, True Faith, and Regret (find New Order - Substance for a collection of hits...).

Fun fact about Joy Divsion: Founding members Ian Curtis, Bernard Sumner, and Peter Hook were among the four dozen or so people in attendance at the June 4th, 1976 Sex Pistols concert in Manchester, England. They of course, would go on to form Joy Division/New Order. Also in attendance were the founding members of the Buzzcocks and Stephen Patrick Morrissey, who would go on to form The Smiths. Hell of a success rate there....

Unknown pleasures and Transmission are both good. Unfortunately the lead singer was manic depressive and had epilepsy and hanged himself before their us tour.
love will tear us apart again (great song) is probably the best known.
Power, Corruption and lies is probably the best new order album.
