Kevin Smith tried to get another Fletch movie made years ago with Jason Lee starring, but nothing ever came of it. Chase is so good and iconic in the role I can’t imagine anyone else would want to even try. That said, Hamm has great comedic timing (see any of his SNL appearances along with his 30 Rock stint) and this could be pretty good.

Hamm was also fantastic on Curb Your Enthusiasm. He absolutely nailed his Larry David impressions.

Now that Kevin Smith isn't involved, maybe this movie actually has a chance. I don't think he has made a good movie since Chasing Amy.

I'm torn on Smith - his first three films are legendary IMO - Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy. Then I think Dogma and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back are solid, if not great (Alan Rickman as the Voice of God and Chris Rock as the 13th Apostle alone are worth watching). Zack and Miri Make a Porno is decent, and then I think Red State is really, really good. John Goodman is outstanding too. Clerks II is less successful, as is the Jay and Silent Bob Reboot. But, have some hope for Clerks III. Sadly, nearly everything he does with Clerks and J&SB is so indulgent and self-referential it sort of refuses to move anything forward.

I actually am a fan of this movie... by the way, my FIL and MIL both heard this was a funny movie and went to see it in the theater back in the day... they walked out on the movie, offended, after probobly 15 minutes. They couldn't tell from the title that it was a little resque?

Probably right after this scene which happens within the first 15 minutes….(NSFW - language):

"I'll have a Bloody Mary, a steak sandwich and a... steak sandwich."

"One of those manure spreaders jackknifed on the Santa Ana."

“Come on guys it's so simple. Maybe you need a refresher course. It's all ball bearings nowadays.”

"I hate Tommy Lasorda."

People might disagree with me, but to me the role screams Ryan Reynolds. He has the smart ***, I don’t give a **** act down cold. He’s also very funny. I loved Deadpool. He was like a B list celebrity until he found himself. He knows what he is.

Yes
He would own it. A possible better than the original

He made Just Friends funny. Anna Faris plays a good nutjob though too.

Anything with Jon Hamm and John Slattery is going to be good.

Hamm isn’t going to be able to do Chevy Chase’s Fletch - no one can do that (maybe Martin Short?). This looks OK - Slattery is always fun and it’s nice to see the two of them back together.

Then why set it up for failure by calling it Fletch? The comparisons are going to be made, like it or not. It may be a great movie on its own merit, but by calling it Fletch, it immediately requires a certain look and feel that this one seems to lack.

Great call…I hadn’t even thought of him.

He just is hard to imagine as the goof that Fletch was - too good looking and suave to pull it off - Fletch was more slapstick which I don;t think Hamm can pull off he seems more deadpan type.

Good to hear - Hamm needs a win like this. He’s more hamstrung (ba dump bump!) than Chase was back when Flerch was made; fewer political correctness issues to for Chase to deal with so he could go all out. If this plays to Hamm’s strengths it’ll be good. No one is going to wear an Afro wig these days….

I've heard that Chevy strayed quite a bit from the character in the book series and that Hamm's portrayal will be closer to it. That is not to say that Chevy wasn't hilarious - he was. It's also not to say Jon won't be ... just potentially differently. I wouldn't know about the books; I have not read them. Perhaps others will chime in on this after they've seen the movie.

OK, so I watched Confess, Fletch and I thought it was pretty good but not great. It seemed to have an 80s vibe to it similar to the earlier Fletch movies. Hamm wasn't as wacky as Chase and there were some funny moments but nothing ROTFL.

This character of Fletch is more in keeping with the character in the book.
