In Florida for spring break with the kids (actually staying in the Keys) but visiting some friends in Miami Beach for dinner and the Miami anti-spring break movement is in full swing. Cops everywhere, midnight curfew, DUI checkpoint coming into the city, and parking is $50-$100 if you can find any. I’ve accidentally been to Miami for Spring Break and it’s awful. Finding parking sucked but once we did dinner was great and relaxing!

Good ....as usual its a shame some have to ruin it for everyone but what has happened down there the last few years was ridiculous. Crazy thing was most of the one's destroying businesses and running afoul of the law were not spring breakers but people in their mid to late 20s that haven't grown up yet. I live north of Miami but am in there for business constantly and glad to see them taking their city back.

funny you post this. I spoke to a nephew yesterday who was in Hollywood FL. He stayed there for SB because it was less than Ft Lauderdale and Miami. He said the transportation, Uber/Lyft, were ridiculously expensive and he probably would have spent less if he just stayed in the closer hotels. He also said that they were often afraid for their lives with fights breaking out spontaneously and kids throwing up. They didn't drink very much because they were afraid to get into a bad position because people were so crazy. They checked out early and flew home.

How are the small businesses reacting to this? One would think that they get a big portion of their yearly income during spring break.

Most are happy. Since a lot of this is centered around the beach front areas. People were not feeling safe to go out day or night. Businesses were being broken into and rampaged. Cars were being destroyed. Most businesses are happy they are taking their city back.

As a Miami Beach high school alum, ca. 1958 it makes me sad to see what happened to a once beautiful place.

Dumb question: Has part of the problem been local kids, not just visitors? I remember seeing videos last year of kids looting, destroying cars, etc. It wasn't clear whether anything specific set these kids off or if they did a flash mob sort of thing and decided to riot. Maybe some of these videos were in Miami Beach. I don’t recall. These videos were ridiculous.

Most of the people if memory serves me correct were not locals and not even college kids. Many of them were out of staters in their mid to late 20s. They need to grow up. Came here with the idea to drink until puking and then go on rampages vandalizing stores and taking what they wanted. Trashing cars parked on the street. It was ridiculous.

Alcohol sales in Miami must be starting to compete with the cocaine business and they simply won't have that.

Hardly news....more of a lather, rinse, repeat kinda thing.
Remember Ft Lauderdale was the big Spring Break destination. They got sick of it and cracked down. Moved to Daytona Beach, they got sick of it, cracked down....moved to Panama City Beach.
Now its come back around to SoFla.
Certainly not unique to Florida...I was living in the Hampton Roads area in '89 when VA Beach had the Greekfest riots.
College kids away from home with lots of alcohol. Its a pretty predictable conclusion.

Also, when I was in my drunken fool stage I only drank beer. Nowadays, everyone’s into harder stuff, it seems. All the reality shows nowadays are all drink drink drink.
I have good friends who went through the drunken fool stage and, like you, they turned into responsible adults. As an aside, neither I, nor Mrs. G, have ever been drunk in our entire lives. We do drink socially, but never to excess. For my part, as a pre-teen I had an alcoholic uncle who let it totally destroy his life. He died in his early 40's. It made a lasting impression on me. My comments are not to suggest the Gambits are Saints but only to note the dichotomy.

There's a youtuber that records boats as they traverse Haulover Inlet. If you haven't seen it, it's crazy. The boats are a sight to see and the conditions make it perilous for some of the smaller vessels.

Yesterday, they posted a video of the Miami River on Sunday. They were recording when they captured a gal that when overboard in the river. Boats scrambled to the area, but only a couple of guys jumped in to try to save her. She went under before they could get her. EMS arrived and retrieved her body, but she was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Very sad. Her friends looked older, so she may not have been part of the Spring Break crowd, but St. Patty's Day had the area hopping. Regardless, very tragic all around.

No word yet on what happened, but the boat captain is likely in a heap of trouble.
