Athletic department likes to brag about “national champions” dance team when introduced at athletic events, yet doesn’t want to support the process of achieving a national championship ….these ladies are student-athletes, give them NIL $….they certainly show more athleticism than we’ve seen on the football field this fall..

This is quite confusing. Are they part of the actual athletic program budget or are they listed as a Club team? If they are getting athletic scholarships and or are part of the AD then they should have funding for this, as mentioned above they have no problem stating how many Natty's they win in front of 100k plus, is that even an actual thing if its truly not an AD sanctioned sport

It's complicated. They aren't an official sport, don't get scholarships, etc. However they do fall under the ICA (the Athletic Department). They used to be a club sport when Mark Sherburne's wife was running it, but they moved under the athletics umbrella at some point (and they'd talk about their National Title's back then too...why wouldn't they?). ICA goes beyond just our athletic teams...they are also overseeing sports camps, the Adaptive Sports program, etc.

So the athletic department funds them to some extent...but not sure what commitments they make to fund trips like this.

'Spirit groups" - cheerleaders, dance team, etc is a line item in the expense budget of ICA (as is the norm for other Universities' programs).
How it is divided out - the $652,000 to the different groups, and for what purposes - I do not know... but that is the total figure for 2023-24.

Also:
I do not think - TTBOMK and recollection - that ICA pays ALL the expenses for the Blue Band. I think some of that is allocated to the Music Department(?) and ICA picks up a smaller portion..... but don't take that as gospel.

Also, in answer to your other question - neither Cheerleading or Dance Team is allocated as a "sport".

I am surprised I haven't seen it mentioned here (maybe I missed it) but Penn State is apparently not funding the Dance Team's trip to their national competition ($70,000).

It is an interesting ARTICLE and question at large to consider. Should the band, cheerleaders, and dance team receive funding for events that are not in a "support" role?

Edit: there was an earlier thread. I'm merging the two together.

True. And they don’t need to show up for games or other events without a fee.
Sure, and ICA doesn’t need to provide their uniforms, pay for their coaches, etc. Save the $ and go with the cheerleaders if that’s the threat.

They’re better and more entertaining than the cheerleaders. I’d walk if I were them.
And I’d say don’t let the door hit you in the *** as you just gave up your biggest source of funding and the opportunity to perform in front of ~1 million people every year.

Did you watch that video? The guy likes them young
I should have posted, “Dude…lol.” Or used a winky emoji at the end. My bad. Yes, I’m aware that Urban has a reputation for liking them on the younger side. Look at my ranking, I’m a Heisman. That’s part of the Heisman entrance exam, along with 409, 1994, and “Wish whack pink black.”

Per what article?

They definitely receive funding from ICA.

"Under the NCAA, dance isn’t considered a sport, meaning the Lionettes have never received the support from athletics like varsity teams, even before the budget cuts. They don’t have access to the Greenberg facility and aren’t featured on anything from Penn State Athletics. The team is part of the multitude of people in the Penn State community reeling from the impacts."

They don’t receive the same level of support as varsity teams (same as the band and cheerleaders) where everything is fully covered, meals, scholarships , etc. They do receive funding (their primary source of funding is ICA).
