Used to scour cities for his buildings when I’d visit them (Paris was a jaunt for sure). Loved his stuff.

I worked for Knoll Furniture for 12 years. Knoll had a line of wooden chairs designed by Gehry. Curiously, they were all named after hockey terms…power play, hat trick, high stick, etc. Like many Knoll pieces, they were more pieces of art than functional furniture. They were beautiful and pricey!

RIP Frank Gehry.

Gehry was first and foremost a Canadian, and thus a big hockey fan. His firm used to, and perhaps still does, field a team in a local California rec league. He also designed the Anaheim ice rink that used to be the Duck’s practice facility as well as the trophy for the NHL World Cup of Hockey.

A lot of designer furniture is not very comfortable, but his Easy Edges line are pretty decent. PSU’s Architecture & Landscape Architecture Library has a Wiggle Side Chair in their furniture collection.

His first major work was the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Maryland back in the 60s before he went out on his own. I like some of his designs, especially the earlier ones that had smaller budgets, which I think forced him to be more creative rather than opulent.

Some years ago I went to Bilbao to visit the Gugenheim museum. Truly spectacular building. Only museum I’ve ever gone to where the building is a greater artwork than its exhibits. IMG_0548.jpegIMG_0548.jpeg

Gehry was born Frank Goldberg into an orthodox Jewish family in Toronto. He moved to California and changed his name because of antisemitism. Two points I’d like to make. Immigration is what makes America great and antisemitism has always been pervasive.
If you click on smaller image you will see “Puppy” by Erie native Jeff Koons. Puppy is a 43 foot tall living sculpture with flowers growing on its infrastructure. Koons is part of the permanent museum collection. Not shy on ego, Koons has a larger than life sculpture of him having sex with his (for a short time) Italian porn star wife who gave up her “film career” to serve for a time in the Italian parliament. @Midnighter

Thank you, Manatree.

I’m not an architect or designer, so rnever researched Gehry. I didn’t know he was Canadian. (Obviously(tic))I just figured he was some hockey nut. Sometimes I looked at these and tried to figure why people would spend good money for them. I now appreciate the artistry (a little bit, anyway).

His stuff has its place. IIRC, it was a real ***** to execute without flaws, and he wasn’t the easiest to work with.
