It was always great because the people in all the contests were All Stars. It is called All Star Weekend for a reason.

My way to fix:
1. Competitors HAVE to be all stars.
2. Owners make tons of money. Make the prize money well worth it.
3. Go back to 1 attempt and 1 attempt only.

If they can't do those three things, then get rid of the event.

I agree- need to participate in the All-Star game to participate in the dunk contest. It's mostly rookies or no-names in the dunk contest which adds to the lack of appeal.

Or, they should get ideas from the Dunkademics thing that Jordan Kilganon participates in. A lot more creativity there.

EDIT: the All-star game has become unwatchable the last several years. Absolutely zero defense (ole!). Approaching WWE in terms of actual competitiveness.

How about the home run contest, too?
I think they should keep both, but they have to change it up. The home run Derby should be something like 10 swings and it should be someone pitching from the mound. Pitchers versus hitters or something like that.
The dunk contest should be the actual players in the game not random person/ secondary players who get six minutes a game. And they should be given a type of dunk that they have to do, with some either artistic flair, or force of the dunk factored in.
