It’s a conservative estimate.

They could really use your support, Bob. Key takeaways from the blurb that will inspire you all over again are -

"The new Palmer Museum of Art at the Arboretum is a priority for University President Eric J. Barron, and with the support of the Board of Trustees, Penn State will be investing heavily to bring it to fruition."

"The new complex will be the only integrated art museum and arboretum among Big Ten institutions and one of the few in the nation, and it is likely to draw 200,000 visitors per year or more."

Do you think they're hedging their bets with "likely" and "or more?" Hmm.

I remember how excited you were about President Barron's watercolors when the news first broke. I hope you can recapture that enthusiasm and be a part of former President, now consultant to the President, Barron's dream. C'mon Bob. Art, Nature, Science, Beauty. Let it be your mantra.

Last I knew hotel prices were 300 a night two night min They worse now??

I‘m sure they are quite a bit more in State College now, especially if you don’t book in advance. My wife and I got a room at the Quality Inn in Lamar for the CMU weekend cheap — $340 total for two nights. We booked the room in August. We wanted to stay at the Hampton Inn in Lamar since it is nicer, but they were full. My wife called the Hampton Inn again last Thursday looking for a cancellation, and they quoted around $800 for two nights.

By the way, it looks like they are building some new hotels off Rt. 26 towards Lemont. We saw the construction on a hill off Rt. 26.

From my understanding of how economists assess value, increased value/economic benefits cannot be claimed if people who visit a venue (such as an art museum/arboretum) were already coming to a location (town/university) for other reasons. For it to actually add value, those 200,000 people (as https://artmuseum.psu.edu/support/ says) have to be coming primarily for it.

Some of those museum-goers might pop by to check out a football game.

VS. Maryland on November 12th with 2 night minimum. Good luck finding any games during the warmer weather or good opponent.

Busloads of elementary school kids from Centre and surrounding counties will be flooding University Park expressly to visit the new art museum. Huge economic impact.

Not unless they come with their parents’ credit cards. Even so, you can’t include spending of Center County residents in Centre County as a benefit to Centre County since the assumption is that county residents who spend money at the Arboretum would have spent that money somewhere else in Centre County anyway. All it really does is change where money is spent and who actually gets it.

MN, I’m glad to hear about the added income to the State College community. Kar and I love State College and the surrounding area, wish we could relocate there in a retirement community.

I was very fearful that the 2019 & 2020 collapse to local businesses was going to take a long time to rejuvenate. I do understand that many shops didn’t survive, but appears the PSU cash cow is again creating opportunities for new businesses.

Although I drink bourbon like water going thru a fishes gills, I’m really disappointed that the Beaver will be selling beer and possibility spirits. I hope Lupert’s proposed casino doesn’t undermine the quality of living in the area, I also hope the additional monies it generates for the community will be worth it.

Child admissions: $50
Box lunch (sammich, apple slices, juice box): $35
Make your own art: $30

The money will flow in like wine.

Also, PSU has their own sound methodology for determining economic impact. Thorndike and her cohorts got this.

Also, former president and now consultant to the president Barron could offer to give watercolor lessons at say $250/hour.

it won't be a destination on its own but it will add to the list of things to do in HV for both visitors and residents.

So PSU spent a pretty penny to commission this study. Anyone want to guess why? Here's mine:
