And any other team team name they can bully into changing. Are the Chiefs, Braves, and Indians next?
Also going to be a whole lot of white people who say it’s offensive to others (who most likely don’t give a ****)Gonna be a whole lot of white people on here declaring that the "Redskins" name is absolutely not offensive to them.
Are the Chiefs, Braves, and Indians next?
They have already tried pushing for the Indians to change their name.
However, if I were a tribal member, I don't think that I would be offended by the mascot of a Chief or a Brave. Both have positive connotations unless you just don't like that somebody from another race is using it. But then again, it's an English word that no tribes actually used until they started speaking English. Then you can say that you don't care what the natives think because it's not their cultural language anyway.
Getting rid of these mascots virtually eliminates a large amount of visibility of the Native American community. They will just become an invisible part of society unless you live near a reservation or see more commercials with fictitious Wall Street Braves eating Crunch bars.

It's all a power play. This whole year has been one big power grab.Whole lotta small percentage of minorities and white liberals who are going to pretend to care about an issue, but instead want to use this is a power play over the majority.
This has been an issue for a long time. It’s offensive.
Gonna be a whole lot of white people on here declaring that the "Redskins" name is absolutely not offensive to them.
Won’t fit on the jerseyIf I were Snyder, I would name the team the Planned Parenthood Dead Babies.
The Indians did decide. 90% of them are cool with it.
Well, I guess that Notre Dame will also have to change it's mascot as well. Fighting Irish has to be offensive to anyone of Irish descent. Auburn War Eagles; too militaristic, LSU and Missouri Tigers; since tigers are endangered this is highly disrespectful, Tennessee Volunteers; nope, too white and represents colonialism, South Carolina Gamecocks; have to change this one since cockfighting is outlawed and the name represents violence, Ole Miss Rebels; enough said. Those are just SEC teams except for Notre Dame. How can people function and live in this country knowing that George Washington University has Colonials as it's mascot? You know, why not change it to some other Native American term. No reason to throw the baby out with the bathwater. Honor them. I feel the same about this wave of "Rebels is offensive." No, thats people ancestors. This country was also founded by Rebels. Its OK to be a Rebel as long as you win I suppose.
I know many in this region and most if not all call themselves indians and prefer it.I asked a native American coworker once if it bothered him to be called an Indian. He said, "It doesn't bother me. It reminds me that the white man was either so stupid, or just apathetic, that even after they figured out they weren't in India that they still kept calling us Indians anyway." I've referred to them as Native Americans ever since.
So sensitive. Aren't your the virtuous one. Feel better? This has been an issue for a long time. It’s offensive.
No it's not. What is totally clear is your virtue signaling. It’s becoming clear that any team with a Native American mascot needs to contact a local tribe or tribe with history in the area and get their concurrence on the name or a new name,
PETA will be upset at the cultural appropriation of pigs. The obvious play is Washington Pigskins.
1. Nothing is as basic to football as the ol’ pigskin.
2. You can still call the team The ‘Skins, which everyone in DC does.
3. A huge part of the team’s most successful era was the offensive line known as “The Hogs” so you can save face by saying you are honoring them.
4. Fans already wear rubber pig snouts to games.
5. You’ve got good options for a badass mascot, ala the Razorback of Arkansas.
6. Team colors stay the same. So the Skins are the Skins, same uniforms, a snarling Razorback instead of an Indian on your helmet. Win win win.
I don't understand why Native Americans is OK. They were never Americans till whites said it was OK. I'd be more POed at that. Its just not offensive. It isnt. Its akin to me being offended if you call me white. Or if your black, calling you black. Fighting Indian warriors....frankly I think it makes for a badass mascot...let the Indians decide. Its not for us white folks to say. If enough tribes say they want it gone then thats all that matters.
Listen to this white guy telling a minority what they can and can’t be offended byIts just not offensive. It isnt. Its akin to me being offended if you call me white. Or if your black, calling you black. Fighting Indian warriors....frankly I think it makes for a badass mascot...let the Indians decide. Its not for us white folks to say. If enough tribes say they want it gone then thats all that matters.
That would require them to actually care about the Native Americans, and the history of the USA would indicate there has never been much care for them unless it met the needs of the white man. It’s becoming clear that any team with a Native American mascot needs to contact a local tribe or tribe with history in the area and get their concurrence on the name or a new name, perhaps while funding some scholarships and other outreach to the tribe’s reservation (this last part wouldn’t work for high schools with limited budgets).
That will do good for impoverished native Americans, foster goodwill and send the white liberals looking for someone to be outraged at elsewhere.
This is essentially what the Seminoles have done, who can’t have much more money than a pro team. Why the Redskins haven’t bothered is beyond me.
