It was eye opening to see some of the technique issues Hudson had in the game. Peña did some really good things.

I am not too concerned as Codutti was a little too critical of Hudson IMO. Hudson had that unreal toe tap sideline catch. We have 3 great receivers, especially once Ross gets up to speed. I really liked the way we spread the ball around Saturday and that should give teams fits. Who do you really try to cover vs last year when the only real cover need was Warren.

I don’t think any of them are first round draft picks, but I’ll take them over whatever 3rd circle of hell we had last year.
Just a quick note about one of PSU's WRs from last season. Harrison Wallace III - who portalled to Ole Miss - had the following stats in the Ole Miss opener vs Georgia State on Saturday:
- 5 catches for 130 yds
--- one of his five catches was a 26yd TD
--- he also was one of the punt returners

Ole Miss is a pass-centric offensive team.

Last year KLS ended up having a great season after he transferred to Auburn, and is now in the NFL. Hope things work out similarly for HW III.

The issues with PSU's pass offense last year (and the year before) were certainly not solely caused by the inhabitants of the WR player room. In fact, that was probably not even the biggest share of responsibility for that FUBAR.

Whether this new group is better - of higher quality - than the one before? Who knows? (My guess is "probably", but not by a lot. What I saw from the Syracuse transfer last year would indicate he is probably more fundamentally sound than the PSU guys, but not a huge difference. That was the most obvious difference IMO. No one in that group of new guys was particularly highly sought after in the portal, FWIW. Doesn't mean they can't still be an improvement).
They certainly will HAVE TO get more opportunities, just given that Warren is no longer there as the Option A, B, and C.
But increasing the impact of the downfield passing game will come - if it comes - largely from advancements in other areas of the program (and by default due to Warren's absence), I believe.

Clearly Allar needs to improve also in order for the vertical passing game to the WRs to improve. But just looking at the WRs I would be surprised if there is not significant improvement vs last year. You are subbing out Wallace and Evans for Hudson and Pena. Then you add Ross in place of Clifford. That has to be an upgrade and that is before you get to Denmark and Howard.

I knew that Pena was a good route runner but after watching that breakdown, I think he’s even better at running routes than I thought. He’s super crisp and gets in and out of his breaks so well.

People act like our passing game was awful last year. That simply isn't true.

Warren went over, what, 1100? 1200? 100+ receptions.

Wallace had a great year considering Warren's statistical superiority AND the fact we had 2 1000 yard backs. 700+ on 40+ receptions (I didn't look the #s up, but this is the gust).

The problem was Wallace and Evans didn't record a catch vs Notre Dame. That obviously terrible stat just leaves such an awful taste that it's practically unforgivable. Throw in Wallace's TD-turned-INT vs OSU and you just want to puke.

Regardless of what these new transfers and the younger players do, judgements will be reserved for Oregon (who they played goof against last year) and OSU (this is the one that matters as far as perception). We likely aren't going to have multiple 15+ WR catch games unless we ignore the TEs (as we did vs Nevada until garbage time). Whether we are efficient, explosive, or hopefully both will be dependent on the WRs having multiple skill sets. We need chain movers, we need deep threats, we need tackles broken, and defenders missing tackles due to shifty and elusive play.

I think people say our WR passing game was awful, not the passing game in general. Everyone knows Warren had an all-timer type of season.

I suspect that we are going to game plan in these early creampuff games to really get the WRs involved. It will be good practice, and will establish some rapport and confidence with Allar. We out talent these first 3 teams by such a margin that we should have the freedom to do whatever we choose in these games. If successful, it will also send the message to future opponents that we aren't one dimensional and they can't just focus on slowing down Singleton/Allen in their defensive gameplans.

Their job is to be better than the **** show we had last year. So far so good. Period.

If we need more than that, then our offensive line and running game has failed and we're not getting to our goal this season.

One game, one success. On to game 2.

TRANSFER WR FILM STUDY

See Link Above, I won’t spoil things, but this was a very interesting and frankly unexpected watch. Figured it’d be all rainbows, lollipops and puppy dogs...but it wasn’t sugarcoated at all. Thought it was fair, though. We asked him to put the transfer WRs under the microscope and, well, he did.

I watched it earlier in the week. I really like this guy. He does a great job. Good news on Pena. Hudson has some things to clean up. Good to catch them now.

That was terrible as you said. The review of the receivers blocking or trying to get open post season was probably the icing on the cake.
