My Firestick, which is jail broken, has suddenly begun saying "no data". It's worked great for the 4-5 months we've had it, but just tonight, when I turned it on, did it begin giving this message.

I wasn't too keen on getting it to begin with, but my wife really wanted it and had her son "jail break" it. I'm not very knowledgeable on these type of things, so any help/advise would be appreciated.

I have learned that sometimes they get scrambled and I suppose you're just screwed, and after a quick Google search I've learned you can begin using a VPN which sometimes works. I know what a VPN is, as I use one for payroll on my laptop, but I don't know how to go about downloading one to the Firestick, assuming that would correct the issue.

Anyone else have this issue, and if so would you please lend some advise?

Thank you in advance, WW.

I’d advice you to get more advise from your wife’s son
Ha ha, already tried but he's out of town for several days. First thing I did actually since he knows his stuff.

Hoping it's something simple but with my luck it won't be. Tried the old turn it off for a bit, then restart with no luck. That's about the extent of my know how on these things. ;)

First of all, there is no such thing as jailbreaking a Fire Stick. Anyone who is trying to tell you jailbreaking is a thing is a dumbass or thinks you are one. Jailbreaking is referring to the process of modifying the device to give unrestricted rights and privileges that a device owner isn't supposed to have, and thus voiding your warranty.

All it takes to install apps from outside the app store is turning on one or two settings located in the system settings that are readily available out of the box. Calling this jailbreaking would be like saying you have jailbroken your computer because you downloaded and installed an app off randomwebsite.com instead of the Windows/Mac/Chrome app stores.

Just factory reset the thing and reinstall whatever apps it was you had on there. If the app isn't available thru the app store on there, turn on "Apps from unknown sources" then download them off apkmirror.com.

If he installed Kodi on there, then it would be best to just get him to do it again because none of us would have any way of knowing what add-ons he added to Kodi.

Thank you, I learned something today. [cheers] I honestly know very little about these things so any information is appreciated. He used the term "jail breaking when he installed it, and of course I'd heard the term used before.

I turned it off for the night last night, and turned it back today, and it's working fine. Must have been a glitch or something, not sure. It wasn't the Internet connection, as I had Internet on all my other devices.

I did a little research and I read where some people felt it was good idea to use a VPN when using a stick, but I'm unsure how to install one on it. I have a VPN on my work laptop, as well as my personal one, for work related things such as payroll, so I know what they are, lol.

Thanks again for explaining some things, much appreciated.

What apps do you use on it?

Mostly just Terrarium. We've only had it a couple of months and that app seems to give us all we really need: movies and tv shows.

We're like everyone else, we stay very busy with work and life in general, and we haven't explored much of anything else on it tbh.

You should be fine for now then. Assuming you don't have a version of Terrarium modified to support Torrenting or other P2P (peer to peer, like Napster if you remember that) versions of streaming, you should be fine without a VPN unless you have a particularly strict internet service provider. But if you had a strict ISP, you would likely have already heard from them about it after two months of use.

Thanks again, I appreciate you explaining some of this stuff to a , basically, non techie, lol.

When we can find the time we enjoy watching The Vikings, and are going to begin looking for some other series we've missed out on over the past few years. Game of Thrones looks intriguing, and I know a lot of guys here have said it was great.

What I like best of all is the incredible number of movies to choose from; it has all the classics, along with recent releases.

Thanks again wildcatsboston.

You're welcome. I do recommend looking into getting a legal streaming service. For only around $10-12 a month each, the amount of content available is incredible.

I only use Terrarium to keep up with TV shows I like to watch on cable. I don't have a DVR, and the cable I get is included in my rent. I'd have to upgrade my cable and the arrangement my apartment has with the cable company means I'd have to pay the full cost of the cable for the upgrade on ttop of what my rent is, and the landlord won't reduce my rent if I do that for some dumbass reason. I love a DVR but I don't love it enough to foot the cost of a cable bill twice a month.

Yeah, I have to admit I wasn't very enthused with the idea in the first place; the idea of paying a one time thing of $40 for the stick, and then having unlimited stuff to choose from to watch without paying, made me uneasy. I told the wife we didn't need it, as we have full cable, but she really wanted it. She was like, "we won't need cable if we get this", to which I replied, oh yes we will, I want to watch my football and basketball!

Anyway, we have both, and I enjoy all the options we have; it's pretty cool to be able to watch some of my favorite shows from the 70's and 80's, plus all the westerns and war movies I could want, lol. That said, it wouldn't really bother me if we did away with it, as I'm a person who loves to read. Don't get me wrong, I like to watch a movie or a few shows, but given the choice I'll opt for a good book every time. (Unless there's a good football game on, or my beloved Cats are playing.)

I worried the first month after he installed it we'd have law enforcement knocking on our door, lol. I told my wife I was going to play dumb and throw her under the proverbial bus since it was her idea to begin with. :sunglasses:

I told my dad this, you bought a $25-40 device, installed something that opened it up to viruses, and was able to watch literally any movie or tv show ever made. Even if the thing only lasted a month consider it a wash.

What you’re doing is illegal and you will be punished by law
Obviously you’re joking, but that’s impossible. Millions of people are using these “jailbroken” fire sticks, and I know cops that use them as well.

You're basically in the clear as long as your aren't doing any P2P. Downloading files could potentially get you in hot water too depending on the ISP, but no one is downloading movies and TV shows to a Fire stick anyways.
