First-half thread for NU-Minnesota

I think we're going to have a pretty lackluster crowd tonight -- not surprising for an 8 pm tip against the Gophers. Not exactly a marquee matchup. One of the students sections is less than a quarter full five minutes to tip. The other is maybe half full.

As I posted, I think NU gets it done tonight. If they're going to win another game this year, this has to be the night. Collins is 6-2 against Minnesota in his career. Plus, NU is wearing the Gothics.

Talking heads on ESPN all over Minny in their pre-game. Basically give NU no shot.

Well...not a good start for the guys in black. They had Falzon guarding Murphy to start the game. That's not going to work. Benson picked up two fouls in a minute. Sounds about right. We've played 4:33 and NU has one basket and three turnovers.

Very disappointing effort so far. Thankfully, Miller Kopp got hot and drained a couple 3s to pull NU to within 20-14. But the Cats still have more turnovers (7) than baskets (5). Minnesota is also getting inside with ease -- 12 of their 20 points are from the paint.

I'm not seeing any sense of urgency for the Cats. They just look lethargic.

Lethargic has nothing to do with it. We have no plan on offense and no continuity. You shouldn’t be out of the game after holding the opponent to 32 in a half.

Thing is, Minny isn't much better. NU has 8 baskets, Minny has 10. Both teams are shooting less than 40 percent from the floor and less than 30 percent from 3. The difference is Minny is outscoring NU 10-1 at the FT line. NU had 10 first-half fouls. That, plus nine turnovers, and there's your margin.

I don't think Collins is a very good coach but I'm good with having him as HC and leader of the program.
