For the refs and/or psychologists on the board

A play that really stood out to me in last night's game came with about 2:20 left in overtime. Van Zegeren had just scored off a nice pass to take a one point lead. MD called timeout, inbounded, and the Cats trapped Carter in the lane. Watching the replay, he was a second in the lane, trapped for 4 and then took 2 seconds to make an outlet pass and stumble out of the lane. In all, he was there for 7 seconds. Trimble then took the release pass, drove, dished back to Carter and he made a layup. Here is the question:

As a ref, is there no call because:

1) The players should decide the game and a 3-second call at a critical juncture is taking the game away from them
2) I am so busy looking for his pivot foot to move when trapped or for defensive contact I don't pay attention to the 3 seconds
3) With so much happening I didn't notice he was in the lane
4) My partner makes that call
5) I blew it.

Any insight would be helpful.

The three-second rule, along with traveling, should be called a lot more often. And carrying the ball while dribbling hasn't been called in years.

I'm no ref or psychologist. But my guess is:

6) All of the above.

I was livid when Van Zegeren was called for a touch foul with Northwestern trailing by two and a little over a minute to play in overtime.

I think it was Scottie or Sanjay who had a clean block of a Melo lay up that was called a foul. That was a four point swing.

Forget about the refs though, you've got to make free throws. You can't contend for anything if you don't make free throws.

There was a bad example of that last night as well.
