Forecastle Lineup

Sam Smith, My Morning Jacket, and Widespread Panic headlining. Also Modest Mouse, Cage the Elephant, Houndmouth, TWEEDY, Tallest Man On Earth, Portugal. The Man, Shovels & Rope, Big K.R.I.T., Cold War Kids, The Gaslight Anthem, St. Paul & the Broken Bones. A bit disappointing on the top line (WTF Sam Smith?) but pretty good depth there. Really looking forward to Modest Mouse.

Good Kentucky representation with MMJ, Cage the Elephant and Sturgill Simpson (far and away the best thing going in country music right now). Plus it's one of the most beautiful venues of all the large festivals.

Cherub and Kiesza are who headline for me. We will go to see them.

I was disappointed. Sam Smith is great, but just doesn't seem like a music festival act to me. If MMJ weren't from Louisville, no one in KY would even know who they are. Cage the Elephant really hasn't been relevant for a few years. Kind of the same thing for Modest Mouse.

Sturgill Simpson will be incredible. They better have him on the biggest stage, because he'll draw a huge portion of the crowd.

But the rest are just meh. Shovels and Rope are good, but I think they were at Headliners a few months ago. Sturgill is at Mercury Ballroom this Friday.

All in all, every act announced you could see at a tiny venue like Headliners or Mercury Ballroom except Sam Smith, MMJ, and Modest Mouse. Not a very strong initial announcement. At all. Unless they bring more oomph with the next list of performers, this will spell the beginning of the end for this music festival in terms of national relevance imo.

I think he's a great talent. That said, I only like 2 or 3 of his songs, and only the acoustic cut; not the original cut.

I don't see any way his style translates favorably to a music festival.

Forecastle is weak and always has been. It's fun, but if they're going to expect to be a formidable opponent to Bonaroo or Lollapalooza, they better bring the big guns

EDIT: efff Sam Smith. He's basically a poor man's Biz Markie at best

I dont get it, i look at that lineup and do not see a single band i would drive to louisville (or anywhere) to see. If this is what music is coming to, then it must be coming to a sorry end. When a show has a So called Headliner as My morning jacket, it has to be all down hill from there.

This is how I feel. Kind of limp.

I don't think they're gunning to be a competitor on the level of Bonnaroo or Lollaplooza. Especially since the same people run Forecastle now as run Bonnarroo. There are a lot of festivals out there, and I see Forecastle competing with the second tied of them. A lot of festivals seemed to have thin lineups this year, and the number of them out there might be part of the problem - too many without enough big acts to fill them all.

Probably true, but still unfortunate. Especially considering the level of acts even just last year; let alone years prior.

As someone who is in the event business, these events take time. That above lineup costs well over 1 million I'd estimate.

Lolla has been around longer and Bonnaroo is more established. And at this point, I bet bands would PAY to play at either of those shows (Smaller ones, at least). No reason this event can't continue to grow.

Also, depending on when these big festivals book acts (I'm assuming fairly recently), a lot of bands are already on tour. Two bands I tried to book for my event, Phantogram and Alt-J, aren't even available.

Note: I would be ecstatic to book just ONE of those bands above. Not trying to act like I'm anywhere NEAR these festivals. I'm small potatoes.

other than Modest Mouse that lineup is pretty weak. I guess it's better than nothing for Louisville. Been to Lollapalooza a few times and it makes this look like a state fair.

Word on the street is that Willy is going to make a cameo appearance on stage this year. I wonder which band will be brave enough to give him that spotlight???
