Of course academic standards reduce the likelihood of success in sports, especially in revenue-producing sports. I do not think anyone can really dispute that assertion. But, our academic standards also are critical to preserving the identity of Northwestern. They express our priorities, our values, and our self-image. Fitz and Gary have shown that we can have success in football even while maintaining our academic standards and institutional integrity. They worked tirelessly to accomplish their goals within the parameters established and endorsed by the vast majority of alums, trustees, and friends of the school.
