Fullback trap?

I know Langsdorf made a comment a few weeks back about why the fullback trap play has disappeared from our offense this year. But I can't for the life of me remember what he said (old age setting in). Does anyone on here know what he said?

I am one of those old timers who loves it every time the fullback rumbles up the middle. I just about had convulsions from the sheer joy of watching Janovich score what I thought would be the winning TD against Wisky last year. Would love to see that play again soon.

I thought we would see a lot of it last week. I briefly scanned through things; he acted like they had mislaid it with all the injuries along the line. Maybe the line coach is buying into: there is not enough experience to do that minor dance. IMO, the trap really shocks some of these great D lines who get so dominant they are highly aggressive; making up for surprise on regular plays with talent. Even if not totally succsesful; it can temper a D lineman aggression and confidence. .... If your guards can do a simple two step dancing, its easy, they have the harder part - most these guys came from good programs and there has been plenty of time here. Guards are used to being on the move and its usually an easy move for the tackle.

It had to do with quickness to pull and reach the trap. Some of it due to ankle injuries, some just to lack of athleticism of the OL. There were plays against Wisconsin were the OGs couldn't reach the DT on a strait head up zone block.

"We haven't felt as good about the pullers (pulling guards) for some of the traps we've been running," Langsdorf said. "And so it hasn't been a play we've felt great about — not so much because of the fullback, but more because of the trap.

"That's been part of it."

What's more, Langsdorf said, Nebraska has been using more double-tight end sets than last season. However, with standout tight end Cethan Carter sidelined indefinitely with an elbow injury, first-string fullback Luke McNitt's involvement may increase starting Saturday against Purdue.

"It's kind of like, 'How do you balance it all?'" Langsdorf said. "So, Luke's been the one who's been left out a little bit. You might see a carry from him, but not a lot."

The 6-foot-2, 240-pound McNitt, a junior from Kearney, has blocked well.

"He's a tough kid," Langsdorf said. "We have a good package for him this week. He'll be a lead blocker on some stuff. He's a thumper, now. And he's doing a great job on special teams — has had some big-time tackles."

Langsdorf's thoughts are mostly on keeping the offense moving despite a rash of injuries.

"We're thin and we've got guys playing a little bit out of position — just in the line, we're having to bounce guys around positions," he said. "There's some stuff you have to tweak a little bit and make sure we're getting the right personnel groupings together with the plays and stuff guys know and do well."

It may have something to do with the loss of an NFL starting (possible Pro Bowl - is the FB a Pro Bowl position?) full back.

My thoughts as well. If we have linemen who cannot make that block we are very much limited in our offense.

May be why we don't call more plays that fit TA....not a knock on Langsdorf ..it just explains some things.

It has been decided no more "runs up the middle". Your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated.

the OSU offense is the Ace or one back set with 2 TEs or a TE and a FB/HB. They do not line up in a straight I, so that eliminates a FB trap play, when you run a one back offense.

Maybe a clue to his future plans we have the second rated FB in the nation Mies as a commit and the 4th ranked FB is visiting next week.

OC has said he wants backs with mass that can block and catch the ball out of the backfield with good speed for FB runs. I think this is his recruiting transition to the likely two top QB next year.
