No. 8 Kentucky Opens Final Season at The Cliff on Tuesday

Due to forecast of rain, opener vs. Xavier has been rescheduled to 6 p.m.

LEXINGTON, Ky. The 50th and final season at Cliff Hagan Stadium will open earlier than expected with Kentucky set to host Xavier on Tuesday, Feb. 20, at 6 p.m. The game has been moved up a day due to the forecast of wet weather on Wednesday.

The Cats (4-0) are coming off a successful opening weekend where they knocked off Wofford, USC Upstate and Evansville in Spartanburg, S. Carolina behind strong pitching and an offense that used extra-base hits to harass the opposing pitching staffs. It is the first time UK has started 4-0 on the road since the 2007 season and first 4-0 overall start since 2012.

The pitching was led by Sean Hjelle and Justin Lewis, who each earned a win with a combine 12.0 innings, four hits, one run, three walks and 12 strikeouts. Lewis punched out a career-high nine hitters in his 6.0 innings of work. The bullpen was terrific too, earning a pair of wins and allowing the Cats to rally from a 5-0 deficit to win Saturday’s opener of a doubleheader vs. USC Upstate.

The offense was led by preseason All-American Tristan Pompey, who had four extra-base hits and hit .471 while extending his consecutive reached base streak to 41 games. Ben Aklinski, Luke Becker, T.J. Collett, Kole Cottam and Luke Heyer all had impressive opening weekends as well.

Kentucky also will host Oakland this weekend in a three-game series beginning Friday.

Xavier should be a solid opponent. After getting hammered in game 1 against FSU they came back and played them respectfully in the next couple games taking an early 2 run lead in game 2 before falling 7-2 and then 5-1 in game 3. Might be a good measuring stick for us considering they have already played top competition even being a mid week game. Who do we expect to see on the mound?

Looks like Schaenzer will get the start.

We haven't seen Marshall or Grant Mac yet. Mac might be injured though.
Macciocchi is a mystery to me. Didn't play in the Fall and I saw a couple scrimmages this Spring and never saw him play.

Brett Marshall started a throwing program in November so I don't know when he'll actually be available to throw innings. Hopefully soon, but he wasn't mentioned on media day as one who will log alot of innings.

Brett Marshall, Andrew Miller, Austin Marozas, Grant Macciocchi, Ben Jordan, Zach Haake, and Brad Dobzanski are pitchers shown on the roster that haven't see action yet. Several are redshirts. Marshall, Macciocchi, and Zach Haake might play this year, right?

The pitchers that have seen action in the first four games are:
Lewis, Justin; Maley, Alec; Coleman, Carson; Hazelwood, Mason; Schaenzer, Brad; Machamer, Chris; Ramsey, Jimmy; Lockhart, Trip; Hjelle, Sean; Harper, Daniel; McGeorge, Aaron; Keen, Austin; Thompson, Zack; and Bringhurst, Crosby.

Miller has to sit out due to transferring from Maryland. Jordan, Dobzanski and Marozas are redshirting due to arm surgery/rehab. Haake broke his non throwing hand and should be available soon.

The bio on Mac says he's recovering from an injury and will play when healthy. Doesn't say what the problem was.
