Recently, there have been high profile commits opting out to go to play minor league basketball. I see this as a potential problem for college basketball. Thoughts?

I say good for them. The only issue I have is if they never get drafted to the NBA what was the point of skipping college?

I have a feeling this trend continues. At least Duke has a perfect class coming in, a superstar who wants to be there along with some guys that could potentially be back for a second year.

Can players get drafted by a NBA team from the G-League?
Yes they have a draft and only a select few get drafted to the league or get their rights picked up by a team.

The g-league is another way to say ,” hey I get paid to try to impress and NBA team in the hopes of getting a contract.

I think there has been only like three players drafted out of the g- league to the NBA. Most players are sent there for development now by most NBA franchises so they get development and playing time.

Even as a ‘secondary’ pro a lot of these guys can make pretty good money when you consider they’re 19 to 21 years old.

If the reason at being mad at these kids is that they didnt come and make your team have the best chance at a championship, that's stupid. Go get paid for doing what you love. If they have that opportunity, they dont owe anything to college.

I was really sad when Livingston didn’t make it! A 6’7” point guard in college? That was going to be awesome!

I can remember being very disappointed about his decision. We really needed him that time because we didn't recruit sny other point guards. OFC

What is the pay in the G league?

It’s around $8k/month....but that’s just for five months. You do get per diem, housing and a meal plan. That’s for undrafted players. Obviously there’s g-leaguers who are multi-millionaires.

There’s guys playing professionally overseas who are comfortably making into six figures.

I think a kid that is good enough is better off to go to a high profile college for a year than the G league. They will get better exposure and help build "their brand" and most likely translating into endorsements and more money. School is not for everybody so at least the G League gives them a chance and make some money. What's the average age of a G League player and how long do they typically last in the G League before they stop playing?

5 X 8 is $40K a year. Kind of a big lie. 1st 5 months, 8K a month feels like you are rich to an 18 YO. Then, you got nothing. Works for a 1 and done who doesnt play himself out of consideration and a non 1 and done who explodes. Probably screws every other kid who could have gone to school and skips it for the G league.

Players signed to Select Contracts can earn $125,000 for the five-month NBA G League season.

I think we will see more and more go this route, at least until the 0ne-and-done is taken away. Even then, I believe we will see many more turn pro out of high school at that point, knowing they can still get paid in the G League. Yes, it will diminish many great players going the college route and make it harder for college coaches to recruit those that will be worth their time but, I can see college going back to more of a team and fundamental game.

No matter what, the Duke name will still be an attractive destiny for those that want to play college, as long as Coach K and a good successor is here.

I worry we may never see a Zion-Bagley-Tatum like guy in a Duke uniform ever again, think top recruits will now skip college altogether.
Here’s to praying we keep AJ Griffin a year from now and also that Patrick Baldwin will still consider college.....

Is the G League gonna be able to pay these guys if there is no season? This makes far more sense to me in a non Corona virus world.

Couldn’t agree more.
I don’t want college basketball to become a niche’ sport like college baseball. I want college basketball to remain big-time entertainment, it’s not looking good though.
If the 50 best recruits each year turn down the chance to play in college, it’s over.

If that’s the case college basketball is about to be screwed. I’m sorry but if that’s my option at 18 I’m taking it

How can they make it that they can go back to college? That doesn’t seem possible!

That's where things are heading. College basketball will become an afterthought. The talent level will be so low. If the NBA does indeed do away with the age limit rule and the G-League starts offering more 6 figure salaries with scholarships, college basketball will no longer be the draw that it even is now. When that happens the television contracts will start dwindling, major college basketball games will be relegated to ESPN+, and the only time you'll see games on national television would be for the tournament which will be on ESPN.
Should have normalized a 2 or 3 year rule decades ago like college football. That's rhe single biggest reason college football has flourised, the talent and star players stay for multiple years.

I’m of the opinion the NCAA needed to act years back to make changes to allow players to make money off their image. They did nothing...and the next 10 years of college basketball may be very bleak. It’s clearly starting to happen right now, all the top players will be bolting right away.

This could get bad fast. Lots of top prospects playing in the G league and then going to the NBA. Maybe make a rule once you sign you can't go to the G league for a year? Make people accountable but still have options.

Some of this has to be due to the coronavirus. Kind of hard saying you want the college experience, and the TV exposure, when no one knows when that will happen.

true but the same could be said of the G League. At least if you're in college you can come back until this plays out. They could still do online classes. I don't know.
