Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell, a straight shooter who is not prone to exaggeration, had this to say after the game:
"I think the quarterback, Dillon is as talented as anybody we’ve played against. And we’ve played some great quarterbacks here and some great quarterbacks in this conference, but, boy, I just feel like the veteraness of a guy that has been in this system for a long time and really confident with his playmakers, really confident in the scheme and he played like an elite quarterback tonight."

Dillon just plays mistake free football.
I think that given OU's overall offensive talent, which is still a work-in-process, Gabriel has done very well.
He does not have the o-line, the backs, the TE and the WR's that teams of recent years have had, but he's still doing a good job.
OU faces a very strong Texas team this Saturday and should be the underdog, but a win or a low scoring, close game, regardless of the outcome, should indicate OU is progressing well.
As far as I'm concerned, OU is in Venables' second year of a three year rebuilding effort. Needless to say, a win over Texas will go a long way in this effort.

OU's OLine hasn't been great in the run game, but they've been very good in pass pro. DG has had a lot of time to sit in the pocket. My view of his performance last night was harsher than Campbell's. He can't throw the ball deep enough to get to a guy was 10.2 100 meter speed. Thompson was way behind the safety. Fortunately, he came back and caught a ball underthrown by more than ten yards. He also missed seeing a wide open receiver in the back of the end zone, I think just before the missed field goal. There were other physical mistakes.
He DID break a solo tackle on the one to score a td. But to differ with Campbell, he's not even top ten in the country this year. Maybe I watch more football than the ISU coach. Gabriel is serviceable. But we won't have the best QB on the field next week. Raving .stats primarily compiled against Tulsa and Arkansas State don't mean much. The GH did do a decent job of shutting down Temple the other night.
Next week will tell us a lot. I'm not expecting greatness from OUr side. Hope I'm wrong.

We're in much better shape this season than last. Jackson waiting in wings and all.
Obviously, OU is in much better shape then a year ago.
Last year OU played essentially without a QB having lost both Williams and Rattler and having Beville who was really no option at all.
Gabriel is not a vintage type OU quarterback and that is common knowledge. But he is just one concern we have in facing a very good Texas team. So many other things need to click as well.
Gabriel could have a career game and it may not be enough to beat Texas.
He's currently 4th nationally in Total QBR.

We must (probably) face the steers twice this season. Hopefully we will test them the first time and win the 2nd
I believe this group of WRs is as good or better than any we've had in recent history. We've had a star here and there; CeeDee, Sterling, Marvin, Westbrook; but this group seems good top to bottom; Anthony, Anderson, Farooq, Gibson, Stoops, Freeman. None of those guys leave a bad impression.
Hope you're right. Let's hope it can be proven against Texas, Kansas, and the rest of the schedule.
There is potential on this year's roster for a sold WR corps, as there is potential for other positions, both on offense and defense. The remaining schedule will reveal so much.
Also, the 2024 recruiting class features 5 WR's, so next year looks to really bolster the receiving corps.
Gabriel not bad but not great. The deep ball and his throwing across his body way to often. The WRs are stout but we need a LOT better play from the HB/TB. The Oline has been pretty decent on pass protection but they can't seem to maul for the running game. The RRS always comes down to who can run the ball the best, which doesn't look good for us.
Gabriel is light years ahead of last year. His passes have settled down a bunch. Hope he hits some good slant passes this week with Farooq, Pettaway and Thompson. Long passes to Anderson and Anthony. This seems to be a vulnerable area in the Shorthorns D. He has the talent to far out shadow Ewers on Sat. Go get em Dillon !!
I think Dillon's great. And I agree with OL needing to maul. Watch out when they come together. We've some hungry horses waiting to chew up some turf. I see it happening soon.
Defense can't afford to lay an egg in the 1st half like they did Iowa St or it could be over at halftime. Hopefully they won't.

No doubt. But if he had any eligibility, IASooner would have been a better option than what we had last year.

We scored under 30 against SMU and Cincinnati. A lot of bad plays. He was very solid Saturday night but still missed several important throws. He's solid most of the time. If he gets us to the 30's or more this week, without not counting defensive scores, then we can talk.
I keep hearing that, but don't quite believe it yet. How he plays this week will matter. This year, so far, the defense is carrying the offense.

Seems like the run of Mayfield, Murray and Hurts….and let’s not forget Williams, may have spoiled some of us. I know it did me. Dillion is a very capable QB, but not what we have been accustomed to running the offense. Alabama is going through the same thing. It happens to even the best programs. Perhaps Jackson Arnold will become what we all desire, but there’s no guarantee.

Remember too that Riley's exit caused Williams and Rattler to transfer and Gabriel became a priority for OU....really the only priority.
OU found itself in no position to bargain and accepted Gabriel even coming off a season-ending injury in his third game with UCF in 2021.
Gabriel is not Mayfield, Murray or Hurts but we need to accept that. And to blame Gabriel for last year's 6-7 record is unfair, given the overall condition of the team, especially with a shaky defense.

For me, it's good to see Venables recruiting an elite QB in each of the next two recruiting hauls in Hawkins and Sperry..... and Zurbrugg (2024) could be a sleeper.
With transfers, early exits and injuries, I think it's important to maintain a good QB depth which OU did not have last season.
Bomar, Rawls as well. But let’s not jinx Jackson.
I also believe that Gabriel does not have the supporting cast around him as the "big 3" had..... and that is a factor in his overall performance.
Everyone remember Bradford also who was one Sooner mistake/injury away from a Natty

Agree. This WR group is very good, and they've all made some very competitive catches thus far. I just hope the O-line can give DG enough time to get the ball to them.
