I'm not a huge Gaines fan. But if he's done for the season, that's a HUGE loss. Not so much on offense, but defense is half the game, Bill Carmody. They just don't have a replacement-level defender on the perimeter - much less someone of good value. AJ gives them a body ... that's about all ... not much more than Spencer or Greer.

I think it already hurt them against DePaul. It would have been a difference.

It probably wouldn't have made much difference with that horrible effort yesterday.

But every quick or powerful B10 guard is going to shred NU if Gaines can't get back.

I just thought I'd throw that out for consideration. It doesn't seem to be on the radar of some the suddenly-empowered geniuses out here.

I think you are spot on, it would've made a difference against Depaul and would've helped yesterday also. I think with Gaines we win both games. He has sneaky good driving and finishing ability and would've had a bunch of opportunities yesterday.

Hope he is back on Sunday because this team, with all its flaws, is capable of winning games in the Big Ten. They've been in every game this season, deep into the 2nd half, regardless of opponent. The record stinks but there is talent on this squad.

If he's not back on Sunday they're going to shut him down for the year and take the medical redshirt. Same thing Iowa did with Bohannon.

You are 100% correct. I hope he's back but if not, glad he'll be back for the next 2 years.

Obviously, it's Anthony's decision. But what is the point of playing hurt this season? Get it fixed now and have 2 more years when the team (hopefully) is better.

There was already a thread on Gaines' injury, this being a developmental season and it would be better to let him heal and have 2 more years with a better chance of helping the team to a tourney. He brings defense and physicality that should help team, a la Lumpkin a few years ago.

You don’t think he’d be worth a couple points? Of course it would have made a difference to have him out there.

Do you have inside info, or is this just speculation? Because it doesn't make any sense to me. He misses one conference game in January, and we need to shut him down for the season? Every season is valuable. Without Gaines, this team is significantly challenged defensively. Are we really getting better and developing players if there's nothing but the frustration of watching other teams score easily at crunch time? Besides, with all the grad transfers here and elsewhere, what's the guarantee that Gaines even sticks around for '21-22 if he is eligible.
Let's get Anthony back on the floor and show some fight in the B1G.

I think Cappy’s saying he has been hurt since last summer and probably before that. He had his arm in a sling last summer on the Europe trip. It’s down to you either play if you can play through it and improve or get it operated on and redshirt. He won’t be the first player at NU to take a redshirt with a shoulder injury. Remember Vedran Vukusic and Drew Crawford.

No, but he's played in 10 games and the medical redshirt rule is that you can play in up to 1/3 of games in the 1st half of the season if you want to be eligible to get one. He hit 10 before DePaul, which is why CC said that he would be evaluated over the 2-week period between DePaul and Minny to see if he could get healthy. If he's not playing Sunday, it means they shut him down.
