I wanted 8, but the more I think about it, the more I like 6. 
- Top two seeds get a bye. 
 - There are already 6 bowls in the rotation, and with a 6 team playoff, they become relevant every year.
- With 6, there's the "illusion" that each Power 5 champ has a seat at the table with one at large ... I say illusion, because the champ would have to earn it, but in terms of selling a 6 team playoff, this would be spouted 
- Also, 6 teams makes each conference championship game a de facto playoff game.
