You could go to six if you considered the CCG the first round, then admit the five champs plus an at-large team chosen from among the indies and nonP5 teams. Then you would only need the committee to pick the sixth team and seed the playoffs. I don't like that much, either. I would rather see an NFL type playoff where you earn your playoff spot by winning, and there are objective criteria for who gets in and how they are seeded, with NO committee. But that's just me.

I think 4 worked pretty well this year. I have a feeling it will stay that way for at least 5-10 years. Those of you who think differently are simply dreaming.

8 is what really makes sense (five P5 champs and three at-large).

But agree that it won't happen for a while. Believe that the current 4 team format is set for quite a while (by contract).

They problem with 8 teams is that it will take away from the regular season. But eventually I think it will be moved to 8 teams sooner or later.

I wanted 8, but the more I think about it, the more I like 6.

- Top two seeds get a bye.
- There are already 6 bowls in the rotation, and with a 6 team playoff, they become relevant every year.
- With 6, there's the "illusion" that each Power 5 champ has a seat at the table with one at large ... I say illusion, because the champ would have to earn it, but in terms of selling a 6 team playoff, this would be spouted
- Also, 6 teams makes each conference championship game a de facto playoff game.

It won't take away from the regular season. This is a myth.

There is no need for a bye in college football. They have 45 days off before it starts anyway. A bye is just crazy. 8 teams

Well, see, that's the flaw in Patterson's idea. It's really a back door way to even things out for the Big 12, by removing the CCG, rather than being a solution for college football in general.

A bye rewards the top two teams .. it's not for rest. It's because they earned it.

He's talking about the bye in between the first round and the semi-finals. Patterson's plan unnecessarily restricts the first round to the last week of the regular season. There is no reason to that. The first round could be played at any time during the 4 weeks in between the semi-finals and the regular season.

The Big XII wants to have a CCG but the NCAA mandates that you must have 12 teams minimum to do it. I dont think its fair that they should have to dilute their product by adding two teams just to have a CCG. Let them have it with 10. But I also say that until they have one, it should just be the four P5 conferences that have a CCG.

I think Patterson realize eventually it will be 8 teams to assure the SEC will always get multiple teams in. After years of the BCS always putting an SEC team in the first year of the playoffs they get shut out of the championship game.

One has to wonder if the SEC would have had seven straight titles if the playoffs were in place back then.

The other conferences should come back and say "The Power 5 conferences that have a Championship" with at large teams filling the rest.

That would light a fire under the big 12.
