My favorite Gene Shue story was on a night when they first started assembling the team that would ultimately win a title with Doc. This was pre-Doc, with McGinnis, Free, Jellybean, Dawkins, etc. They were blowing a team out and if memory serves me correct, if the Sixers scored 125+, everyone got something from Jack in the Box. So they get possession with like 8 seconds to go and Jellybean calls a TO. You would have thought Shue was shot out of a cannon. He went ballistic. You could hear him screaming at Bryant asking WTF he was doing calling a TO. Jellybean thought Shue would want to set up a good shot so that the Sixers could reward their fans with a free greasy burger or something by going over 125. Shue told Bryant that he calls the TO’s, not the players and especially not Jellybean.
Joe was just trying to do right with the fans.
