So I was looking through a family tree on ancestry.com last night and was browsing through the uploaded photos and Dwight D. Eisenhower popped up. Not a blood relative but still pretty cool that he's out there somewhere on the tree.

Anyone else ever find something interesting in their family trees?

My mom and my aunt both claimed that we were related to U.S.Grant although I have no idea how.

My wife's family, generations back has one side the was involved in some moonshine massacre and on the other side had a great great (multiple) grandfather who inherited a number of slaves and promptly free'd them all on Christmas. Not only free'd them but gave them each livestock and other items. Almost like 40 acres and mule.

I am an 8th cousin to Robert E. Lee and a relative to Chet Atkins the country singer. Can't pick your history but genealogy is neat nonetheless.

Good one.

You know someone will say "my mother was a *****..............."
Couldn't resist the easy joke. I'm a direct descendent of Col William Lowther, one of the early settlers of what was Harrison County, VA at the time - pre War of Independence. He later served as the sheriff of the county. There are some cool stories, although I've heard variants of some of those stories, so I'm not sure what's correct.

I have a great grandfather (Simon Fraser) who fought alongside William Wallace and was executed with Wallace. I have another ggf (Anthony Fraser) who was at Valley Forge with Washington. Another died at the Alamo (Patrick Henry Herndon). Another of the Frasers was in Stonewall Jackson's brigade.

If I'm looking at things correctly....my great (times many) grandfather went to school with William Wallace....fought with him...and ended up marrying the sister of Robert the Bruce.

My tree-hugging sister had a rude shock a few years ago when she found out Rush Limbaugh was our fifth cousin. A great Uncle (add a few greats) married the daughter of Benjamin Rush, thus Limbaugh's first name. Limbaugh's middle name, Hudson, is my mothers maiden name and we're all descended from the brothers of Henry Hudson.

I'm sending Trump a bill for back rent on his Manhattan and Jersey real estate holdings.

Big Lick, I'm related to the Lee's in various ways, but to R.E. himself through a Lightfoot great Grandmother of his who lived in the years around 1700.

I found out my family are self made people because going back more beyond my grandparents generations reveal immigration from Ireland, Scotland, and Eastern Europe and none of my people were anything more than poor *** farm people.

Dog, a fella once said "Genealogy is the art of turning dirt farmers into Royalty". I think he nailed it.

I'll tell you a story on that Henry Hudson thing. For decades the Hudson's in Virginia claimed to be descended from the sons of Henry Hudson. There's big prestige being descended from an explorer. My Grandma kept insisting that her father had a family bible that said he was an Uncle. Everyone in the family thought she was a crank.

Flash forward to the days of easy DNA testing , over forty years after Grandma passed. Guess what? Grandma was right. Hudson's son's had the good sense to stay in England. Plus, my sister got confirmation that she was, indeed, related to Rush Limbaugh. It made my year.

Through genealogy searches I have found out that one of my grandmothers second or third cousins was the first governor of WV (Arthur I Boreman)....that one of her many ggfathers was the first Italian immigrant to permanently set up house in what became the US (Pietro Ceasar Albertis), and that most of my ancestors either came here to escape religious persecution of got here as indentured servants.........I've seen a copy of the application that my own GG Grandfather filed for a disability pension after his Civil War service.......and also learned that some people on my mothers side who are in the know about such matters won't share what they have learned about her family.......they tell me "you don't want to know"........ . I think my own story is a lot like most of the others on this forum......interesting stuff and skeletons in the closet.......
