Quite a remarkable man as well as coach. He and the legendary Bud Wilkinson were throwbacks to an era when college football coaches exemplified true champions and built character in the young men they coached.

But, but, I thought OU won the title in 1950?

Just kidding.
Everybody and their brother crowned a national champ back then.

Ladies home and garden. Jet, Grit, Popular mechanics...:D

I was just reading about 1950...yep every publication seemed to crown a MNC in those days. That is why I laugh at Bama fans when they say they've won like 17 of them.

Yeah, it's a total gray area, subject to a crap load of self aggrandizing speculation.
I kind of put stock in 'NCAA recognized' national titles...using that lose criteria, OU has 16.

I'm fair about it though. We've got SEVEN and I'm good with that, for now.

SUC schools are famous for claiming national championships well beyond the coach's poll or the AP poll.

I believe most give them credit for 1938, 1951 and 1998. The rest are revisionist history that would make Bill Clinton blush.

One of the rare occasions when I'm annoyed by somebody that isn't a Longhorn.... or an unappreciative Sooner fan.

And no, the U key is manned by my most accurate finger: right index. . I get that one wrong less than any other. On the other hand, my brain might be the most recent cause of annoyance in my life, even outside this board.
