Lots of stories now popping up since CRISPR became a more commonly known technology for editing / altering genetic sequences//material (not sure of the right therm there)

https://www.npr.org/sections/health...ments-aim-to-create-gene-edited-human-embryos

Here's a recent one from NPR about a US series of experiments

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/26/health/gene-editing-babies-china.html
Here's one of many stories that have been circulating about Chinese experiments in the area (from Nov last year)

This article claims that the work resulted in the first HIV resistant babies......
but there doesn't appear to be any peer reviewed scientific publication associated with the methods / data / outcomes / limitations etc

Earlier - the Chinese created Mentally Ill monkeys.......
exhibiting signs of schizophrenia and what not

So - my primary question is this:

While this type of research (some legit / some not) almost always comes with the justification of the intent to reduce or eliminate the burden of "disease".......I think it's like ANY OTHER tech-advance

It'll take exactly 15 seconds for nations to seek to weaponize it if the concept / methods are repeatable and scalable

I'd like to hear your generic / rambling / scientific / gut-feel / responses to this notion and direction things are going in

What else could genetic editing do?

https://www.newscientist.com/articl...ils-on-the-experiment-that-shocked-the-world/

On Monday, the world was stunned by an Associated Press story claiming that the first gene-edited babies had been born in China. On Wednesday, the scientist responsible revealed far more details during a talk at a gene-editing summit in Hong Kong, including that there is another pregnancy.

There hasn’t yet been any independent verification that two gene-edited girls really have been born. But the technical details revealed by He Jiankui today may have been enough to convince many of the scientists in attendance. However, questions still remain over the ethics and safety of the experiment.

One day we’ll be considered primitive ancestors by people so modified they’ll consider it an insult to be called human. However, being an Ahole will never change no matter the date.

I'm sure you're right about some aspects of who 'we' are right now

but I don't believe humans have smoothly and linearly become more insightful / more technological / and more humane-just as time passes

I am convinced that ancient civilizations like the Egyptians and babylonians had abilities that would perhaps seem like magic to us

Similarly I think in another 75 years we'll be doing REMARKABLE things with gene editing ..... but failing to fight resurgent infectious diseases

I think we're HERKEY JERKEY when it comes to how we change over time

We don't evenly progress in all aspects of life etc

Speaking of genetic tampering

What was that show that was about the rednecks from West Virginia?

I read your post to sound just like one of the honkeytonk musicians that had a ten second clip in that awful show
