When my daughter was 12 years old about twenty years ago, the subject of Mike Tyson came up. She said, “Is that the guy who advertises the grill?” I explained that she was thinking of George Foreman. Then she said, “No that’s not right. You are thinking of Gary Coleman”. Things got more confusing for her from there.

Around the same time, we had a golf discussion about Jack Nicklaus, Phil Mickleson, and Jack Nicholson. She would likely still get them all confused to this day.

George had 5 sons all named George Edward Foreman. He said the boys should have no doubt who their father was.
Also on that darn genius move of grill marketing, he made over $200 million on that deal.

It was a painfully cold and cloudy Saturday afternoon. My dad had a neighbor over for a big boxing match, a heavyweight title fight. I was only 9 and my dad told me I could stay as long as I was quiet. I had no idea who was fighting. When the bell rang I noticed my mom standing by the doorway watching, we were sitting on our couch. After the first round my mom ordered me to leave the room, but dad came to my rescue and overruled “let him watch”. When the fight was over both my dad and his friend couldn’t stop saying “Can you believe it, wow!!” It wasn’t until the age of 13 that I realized we watched the Heavyweight Title match between Joe Frazier vs. George Foreman on ABC Wide World of Sports.

RIP Big George Foreman
