Whether it be a family member, family friend, or BFAM. Lettuce hear your story!

My Pawpaw hit the beaches at Normanday. Was on the Susan B. Anthony which hit an underwater mine and sunk of the coast of Utah Beach. He was the last of his men to leave the ship as it was sinking. He said when he hit the water he looked back to see the nose of the ship going under. Basically lost all his gear but once on the beach he gathered up all he needed from fallen comrades.

Was able to gather the remaining men in his company and by nightfall they all had the equipment they needed to fight on. Earned a Purple Heart (which I have), Bronze Star, Silver Star, and many other accolades. Retired a Lt. Col. He was one cool dude.

One of my best friends and roommates for a while in the Marine Corps took his life after suffering from PTSD a few years ago. He was the biggest guy in our platoon and just an overall intimidating figure (probably around 6'4 - 245). We deployed to Iraq together in 2006 and luckily our company was one of the first combat units to not have any fatalities, although we had a few people who ended up wounded.

I'll never forget the day when we were going to one of the main bases in our area of operation to get showers for the first time in a month or two. Being a large guy who sweated profusely, Wolfe had a smell to him that was akin to a dirty taint mixed with rotten fish. We proceeded to get on a crowded little bus which was packed, he found the last seat in the back and everyone around us decided to give up their seats and stand in the front instead...

I know that's probably not the most flattering story, but it's one that we laughed about and always brings a smile to my face.

Kinda sad but I always use to be with my grandfather on Memorial Day. This will be the first year he won't be there. He had a series of falls last year that forced him into a nursing home and since has developed a horrible case of Alzheimer's. Very sad. He fought in the Pacific in WWII and was at Iwo Jima. He never really liked talking about the war but I always thanked him for his service.

On my fathers side, my other grandfather fought in Normandy and eventually Germany. He passed away right before I was born but my father has letters, pictures, medals, and other crazy Nazi and German photos from WWII in a huge scrap book. He was a tank commander in a Sherman. Think of Brad Pitt in Fury. Unbelievable how similar the pictures look in real life to that movie. He won two purple hearts, and some other medals. I haven't seen them in a long time so I forget what they are. I do remember he has a letter from General Patton thanking each tank crew in a fight.

Obviously I'm very thankful to both of them and proud they were my grandparents.

My favorite memorial day hero story involves Caitlyn Bruce Jenner.

One day Caity, as she likes to be addressed, was sucking c*** in a military bathroom. His or her sergeant stood up and said "you can't suck c*** as an American soldier". Too which Private Jenner said, "I'm an American fighting for this country's freedom"

Caity, then went onto to kick a 6 Star General's ***. The rest is history. Blah blah blah

Happy Memorial Day

Kind of a heartless statement given one of the replies in this thread.

Pretty much. Heroes come in all forms. It's a shame how people "judge" the definition of heroes.

Happy Memorial Day to our military and the transgender social movement. Heroes. American heroes.
