Looks like our old guitar thread didn't survive the transition so let's start a new one...

Custom made Korina V based on '58 specs: super light, fat neck, plays like buttah... and waaaay cheaper than a Gibson (all in, the luthier made it for about $1800).

I'm a big proponent of luthiers/making guitars yourself. Loads of kits out there, and its not that hard to buy quality parts (Warmoth, etc) and make KILLER Teles and Strats (set necks ARE more difficult).

I'm interested in building my own telecaster. Just not sure I'm confident enough to pull it off even with the kit. I have a Gibson SG and an Epiphone Les Paul. Sold an American Player Series Strat a couple of months ago because it never got played. I have a 35 year old Epiphone Hummingbird and a Takamine G Series I purchased about 3 years ago.

I have built 3 Teles and a Strat, all from parts. You have to do a little homework, but imho, it's easier than you think.

I play mine at gigs all the time, no one has ever questioned their sound (or authenticity: they all have "Fender" logos on the headstock lol).

You can source quality used parts Reverb, Ebay, and The Gear Page. The key is the setup... a great setup will make ANY guitar play great.

I've even painted them myself with rattle cans bot from Reranch (I literally just hung them from a tree, painted them nitro, clear coats and then polish). Not PERFECT... but pretty good... and from 3 feet you can't see any imperfections.

So yeah, buy cheap, good quality used parts, bolt it up, get a good setup... and enjoy!

Happy to answer any questions if you decide to try it...

I don't even care if it's a real fender or not. Hell, I've heard the Chibsons are pretty damn good for how cheap they are. I don't know a decent place to get a good setup here in Frankfort. I would be happy to find one in Lexington if anyone has a recommendation.

I'm generally against buying cheap Chibson type stuff... because there's NO resale value... and you'll ALWAYS want to upgrade.

Wilcutt in Lex has a good reputation... but there SHOULD be a decent guitar tech in Frankfort... its a decent sized city...

I just looked: I think JJ Customs is doing repair work and setups out of his house.

I live in Frankfort, and had some setup work done on a Strat clone at Willcutt a number of years ago. Was pleased by the service. I really like the guitar -- it was made in Wisconsin by a small company called U.S. Masters Guitar Works. Unfortunately, they are no longer in business. I'm old and no longer in the acquiring phase, but there's always just one more I'd like to buy. RS Guitarworks in Winchester sells a pretty cool looking guitar for just $1,500. It's called a Slab LowBoy. Ash body, two P-90s. Hmmm.

'94 American-made Tele. Thing is perfect. Never had to have any setting up or work done at all. Just a damn good guitar. It's also my youngest guitar by over 20 years. Guess I like old ones.
