Hard conversations (Pope needs to have with each player)

I'm sure each guy had his own personal expectations and hopes. Maybe Pope is too nice to burst their bubbles, but here is what I think he needs to tell each guy.

Mo D - You aren't a 3pt shooter (14%), and you don't have the offensive game to be a "go-to scorer", you are a down low grinder
Moreno - Actually he is one of the few who I'm happy with, he seems to be playing within himself. Sure there is room for growth.
Chandler - Just focus on spot up 3's (& Def). Sure if they are giving you a lane to the basket take it, but don't go looking for it.
Oweh - Just be more consistent in that fire that you show sometimes, you need to be a leader on this team, that is not limited to scoring, you need to lead in every aspect on the court and in the huddles and in practices and in the locker room.
Aberdeen - There is a reason you were the 7th man last year (on a Championship team), you are a contributor but not a leading player. Don't force things.
JQ - (not seen enough of him yet to have an assessment)
Garrison - I think Pope has already had the conversation with him, and I've seen a much better much more engaged player since his benching, fighting for rebounds & blocking some shots. Just remind him, your job is Defense & Rebounding & being physical.
Johnson - You are an important player to this team, you just need to play within yourself and play within the team structure. If you get others involved like you do Moreno, while still scoring you could have a big 2nd half of the year. But defense is very important too.
Williams - the SEC isn't the American Conference, more physical & less time to think, you have to react & be proactive. If your shot isn't falling, go contribute in other ways (lock-down your guy, get some boards).
Lowe - enough with the 3's, you aren't a 3pt shooter. Also when you penetrate, don't forget to look for wide open guys for 3.
Jelavic - I know you want to be a traditional Euro-4, but your (3pt) shooting just isn't there. Abandon that, focus on playing around the basket, when you do go outside just set screens. Also Euro-4's are usually good passers too, lets see some of that and not be a black hole when you get the ball.
Noah - You are the 12th man. That will limit your minutes. You are ahead of last year, and I think will make another step forward next year. But when you do get on the court, keep doing the little stuff but also get yourself open for open 3's (when we put you in, it's primarily to get some 3's), screen then cut hard to an open 3pt spot and be ready to shoot if passed the ball.

If we are having those conversations a game into the conference portion of the schedule we may need to start thinking about where we are hosting the NIT at because Rupp will be hosting the high school sweet 16

If Trent wants to come back next year he needs to drop about 15-20 lbs and totally dedicate himself to becoming a shooting guard.
If he just shot the ball when his teammates actually find him, and shot it confidently, he wouldn’t be in the dog house. We have a team that is deficient shooting the ball and we still can’t play a 40% shooter because he simply won’t shoot.

And yes, even as much body work as he did from last year, he has a long way to go. I don’t expect him to become an elite athlete, but he has to be quick enough to put up some resistance when defending the perimeter.

Sure wish he was crashing the glass for timely rebounds, like he did last season, but it’s like he’s taking on the idea of being a catch and shoot guy to the point that he doesn’t put himself in position to do much else.

If I remember correctly this is exactly opposite of what pope wanted him to do between his freshman year and this year. Which I always thought was weird.

LMFAO...you think calling a kid like DA, who is one of your best players into your office and saying "there's a reason you were a 7th man last season" is a bright idea lol? He will say, "Dude, this team sure as Hell ain't that one".
Or calling Lowe in to tell him his shooting sucks but to not forget to look for open three point shooters when he drives? He will say "I do, if you haven't noticed, but they just clank them".
None of these things are breaking news. You don't call kids in to tell them their limitations. You have them compete in practice and games within the system you are running, doing the things you ask, and if they are not doing it, you cut their playing time or sit them.

True but Trent is never going to contribute as a small ball 4 or even in Oweh's role as the big wing.
He has to get a step quicker to be able to get his shot off.
Trent should model his game after Julius Mays or Ravi Moss, two guys who weren't very athletic but knew how to come in and get open.
We have other players to get rebounds.
Trent needs to focus solely on the role of bench shooter.

I was lost when I saw “Hard conversations” and Pope in the same context…

The only hard conversations Pope is wired for, is asking a female store clerk which pads they recommend for his daughters.

He’s like the dolphin swimming in shark infested waters, he’s out of his element 💯💯

Just being brutally honest.

You know, if Pope struggles through the end of next year and either decides to walk away or gets his walking papers, that’s one thing, but I think a FAIR (not entitled feeling) fan should do all they can to support the program and hope things improve in this nearly impossible sport to navigate right now. It’s ok to be a little peed off, I am myself, but to play pile on, and consistently blab from the mouth in public places before giving our players and coaches a reasonable time frame into the conference schedule after getting players back from injury is simply not fair in my eyes.

Yes, it’s not been a fairytale start this season, but we are (1) game into the conference schedule with the bad luck of having to play arguably the best team in the conference on their court in the first game.

Not so many years ago and back through history, only the top 6 to 10 programs got most of the TV time which made the better players get more airtime hence wanting to go there. There was no (legal) $$$ involved so the big time players didn’t normally go to places like BYU. Now, anybody that wants to spend a fortune on players is in the game making it harder to have those 3-5 loss seasons. It’s completely different. Things are stretched thinner now with respect to how many teams out there are serious threats from game to game.

Look, I got it you don't like Pope. But you've had a couple post recently that are just going on personal attacks and it makes you look like a douche. I believe you're the one that needs the tampon.

I've lost all patience with Pope who is soft, as evidenced by his pouting after losses. That is just unacceptable. THAT personality trait alone tells me this guy will never get it done here. I had great hope for the hire but I find myself dreading the next game.
