Has the SEC outperformed expectations thus far?

The conference received 14 totals bids out of 64.

Assuming Alabama wins, they'll have 6 of the remaing 16 teams. If Ole Miss wins tonight, it'll be 7 of 16.

The SEC has increased its hold on the marketplace so to speak.

Based on this it looks like the conference is doing quite well so far, at least to me.

Thoughts?

I said in another thread that of course there’s going to be several losses when there’s 14 teams in it. Obviously there’s not going to be 14 SEC teams in the sweet 16 lol

I’m looking at it in a positive way, it guarantees the SEC will have at least one team in the Elite Eight.

But yes, I agree, too bad Vols. LOL!

The SEC should have had about 8 teams get in, the ACC sucked so bad they couldn’t put but four in. They would normally have around 8 in.

They had 8 different teams make second round so those were clear tourney teams. Then Missouri and Mississippi State were no brainer at larges. Georgia too. The only two that were questionable were Texas and Oklahoma.

Texas really should not have made it. Oklahoma had a top 3-5 OOC so I don’t think you can leave them out

This right here. To this point the fact we have 7 teams in the field of 16 highlights the strength of the SEC. I hope the trend continues - at least for us anyways!

I know I'm biased but it does seem like the media and everyone else loves to trash the SEC when given the chance, however weak their arguments may be.

Now, I wonder if talking heads will give the conference its due for the S16 recorrd.

Doing well any time you have 7 of the final 16.
But I wouldn't say the SEC has "out performed expectations".
Went 8-6 in opening round (including First 4 game). Slight disappointment.
Went 7-1 in 2nd round (that was quite good).
If you go by Seeds, our "unexpected wins" were 10vs7 & 10vs2 (Ark), and 6vs3 (Ole Miss). And our losses have all been close 4vs5, 9vs8, 9vs8, 8vs9, 11vs11, except for two 6vs11 & 7vs10.

By seed line, we would have expected to be at a record of 15-7 thru first two rounds of NCAA tournament if you ignore play in game with Texas (since 11v11).

Actual finish: 15-6. So the SEC has exceeded expectations slightly. Which is insane considering how high those expectations were.

6 of the 7 teams that advanced were the top of the conference. Only exception is Texas A&M was a top half of the conference team. Arkansas is the only back have of the conference team to still be playing. I see the SEC teams that are advancing as the teams that went on the road and won big games. Most of the teams that got knocked out of the tournament from the SEC relied on home cooking Georgia, Vandy, Missouri, Texas, and Oklahoma in SEC play to get in. Oklahoma did win some really good non-conference games on neutral courts early. Either way best way to determine who is going to advance in the NCAA tournament is who performed on the road in conference play.

Yes, the 13th team losing a squeaker to UCONN shows how overrated the conference was. That got old quick. Vandy could have won.

Only Georgia performed poorly.

Bama reminds me of Cal’s offense. It’s just one on one go beat your man and make a shot. Dook for the most part runs screens, cuts, and pick and roll. As much as I despise them they are carving Alabama up with their offense.

I think it is a bad deal to get that many sec teams. I think it was disadvantage Kentucky to play Tennessee for the 3rd time. Same goes for any other SEC teams playing.

I have to agree with you about UK getting a raw deal. Hindsight is always 20/20, and I'm certainly team BBN, but us getting Tennessee for a third time was definitely a disadvantage.

I guess with having so many conference teams invited rematches are inevitable, but you'd think we could be paired with a SEC team that's not one of our main rivals, at least at the region level.

Each conference opponent not only play one another at least once, sometimes twice but they also watch film on each team. In addition to that, they watch some of those teams more because they are watching film of a different conference opponent play them.

Excuses, excuses but it’s a disadvantage to any conference to have that many teams in the tournament.
