switched to AT&T uverse 3 months ago, and really like it. unexpectedly moving, and the new house isn't in the uverse service area. so, back to time warner for internet service, even though I swore i'd never go back. I showed them. anyway, last I saw they are charging $8 a month to rent their modem. so I'd rather buy my own than rent one. most of the units on the time warner approved list are combined modem+router. seems like a smart move, but i'm seeing stray comments on the net that you're better off buying a modem and separately a router, that the technology isn't good (or good enough yet) when they are combined.

anyone here have any experience with this issue? thanks......

I just switched over...bought a modem and router separately. Make sure it's compatible with Time Warner. I spent $45 combined and everything works great.

Don't buy a gateway , aka a modem and router combo . Get the sb6141 and then find a router that suites your needs or technical capabilities . For instance you can get an Apple airport that is basically plug and play , it's a good router that is mostly trouble free but it has limited features to customize . Get the nighthawk if you need more range or want to customize your wireless more , you can do more with this one but if you don't know how to use it then what's the point .

Thanks! That's good info. I guess I was thinking that the difference between a $50 router and a $300 router was increased speed and increased range, and my own technical abilities didn't have anything to do with it. But if there's not a lot of difference in speed and range, and what you get are extra bells and whistles that I'd never use, then it's just wasted money....

My parents have a modem/router combo that Comcast provided when our previous modem stopped working. I keep insisting that they need to buy their own modem instead of paying the modem rental fee every month, alas my comments are falling on deaf ears.

The problem is most people are idiots when it comes to setting up and maintaining any computer device auxiliaries.

If you know what you are doing, go with an ASUS router. There are several online guides that can help with setup.

If not then you might want to go with Google's new On Hub router. Pretty much a plug and play setup, plus it has some tools that make it easy to get guests on your network.

Thanks for the replies. Think I'm going to go with the SB6141 modem, and for the router the TRENDnet TEW-818DRU review at cnet makes it sound like just the thing.....
