all this from a first time head coach. Can't believe it
First year head coach that knows what he's doing. Big difference. Also, in all seriousness, people who are advocating for experience is because the two jobs are completely different. Despite Clemson's lack of major success prior to Swiney, they've been a program that's had a solid foundation.
For me the UK job is so unique, you don't get to learn on the job. Failures during that time will just cause further erosion you may never recover from. Take Swiney. He takes over for Bowden mid season with a preseason top 10 team. Had a solid second season winning 9 games. Then he takes a step back winning 6 the next season but he had a lot of close losses. Wins 11 the following season.
He had a good base when he started. He was recruiting coordinator and he was able to learn from his mistakes. I don't think Stoops is allowed this luxery. Mistakes result in classes falling apart and your depth ultimately takes a hit. He also takes over for a poor base.
A person who has never owned a business can open a McDonald's or a Wendy's and be successful despite mistakes. But a first year person is going to have a harder time saving the Shoney's down the street.
