Trying to get my mind off of the Wisconsin game and thinking about vacation. My family and I are going to Hilton Head this summer and staying at the Breakers in the Coligny Plaza area. This is our first trip and need some restaurant recommendations. Thanks in advance.

Place is extremely crowded from mid-June on. Restaurants hard to get into without reservations. Otherwise, plan to eat around 5pm or 10pm. After 5-7 trips there over the years, giving up summer trips after last year's experience in late-June. As you can see by the number of trips we've made, overall it's a great place. But now not worth the summer hassle.

Redfish is great. We found a new joint last year right beside there, Lowcountry Backyard, that was fantastic.

There isn't a lot of *great* food on the island, just a lot of stuff that is pretty good. We usually hit Marley's, Skull Creek Marina, Truffles, and The Old Oyster Factory.

Roast Fish and Cornbread is good, but hard to get into. Been meaning to try the SeaShack which is just straight fried fish.

It is really touristy, especially at Coligny, so be ready for way too many people.

Yeah, it's a bit touristy around Coligny...

...but, you're a tourist, in America.

Breakers is great, where we always stay. Can't get a better deal or better location, imo.

Hilton Head is so clean & nice...tons of great food options. You'll love it. Pick up the 'Dining Guide', you'll see them everywhere.

The Happy Hour at Big Bamboo across the street from Breakers is a personal favorite. Half price drinks & apps. Blackened Grouper fingers ftw.

rack Big Bamboo's happy hour, it is solid. There are also a few decent happy hours in South Beach.

It is. Public beach, millions of hotel rooms and tiny condos, lots of people from New Jersey, and places trying to tell you trinkets.

Sea Pines/Palmetto Dunes are where its at.

Thought so. Coligny is unique, but it's definitely the jersey shore of HHI. Exactly where I would expect to find BBdK. There are homeless people, too. Mods please ban OP for bringing this trash to the paddock.

Meh. I grew up in Sea Pines, spend multiple weeks there every summer from age 5-18...family still has a Condo at Marriott Monarch, and one in Marriott Grand Ocean as well on N Forest Beach.

Breakers Condos are 2 bedroom, living room, great views -- plenty for a couple...and within walking distance of tons of places to eat & drink. Priced well. Think we paid about $800 for a week last time.

If you're golfing, have a big family, or goal is to be secluded, the Coligny area certainly isn't for you. The beach area in front of the Holiday/Tiki Bar is indeed nuts...not so much in front of Breakers.

We prefer the Caribbean or Mexico for our beach vacations these days, but would stay at Breakers again in a heartbeat. It's perfect for what we enjoy (Lots of restaurants, bars, things to do in a central location). Plus, we've had about 10 of us the last few trips, so it was good for the vibe of the trip. If you want to blow your wad in South Carolina, go right ahead.

If you have a really big crew though, best bet is to just rent a huge mansion on the beach.

Mash has left Lexington before? Damn. Color me impressed. As to where to find me, look about 11 miles off the coast of Venezuela, little island called Aruba -- that's where I'll be in 2 weeks. Enjoy Nicholasville Rd.

All inclusive touristy destination? What a clown. You have to pass through 2 private gates to reach my quadrant. Don't even think about sneaking by on a bicycle either; the path is gated.

If I go to the beach, I want to be able to catnap by the ocean, read a few books without noise from people, and have plenty of space. Way worth it for a private beach location, IMO.

One thing I would keep an eye out for, the last few times I have been to HHI, there have been a lot of Jellyfish, which sucks. I go down a few days every year with some friends, but used to go early summer, and now go in mid-august, which might be the issue. Have been hit each of the past three years (the same times we went in August) and end up with a horrible rash from it for like 3 weeks after the trip.

Aruba looks legit, I had planned to fly down there on all thesesouthwest miles I have accumulated, but they are discontinuing flights from Louisville in August, when I had blocked out time to go...

^ it's ridicto, dude.

...we ran into that same issue with flights. Rented a car for $40, and are flying out of Indy -- for some reason there were return flights into Louisville though, so that works out fine. Worth checking to see if that's still the case. 8 nights, can't wait.
