I have wondered this for a while and figured I would ask on here since some of you folks have alot more knowledge on the history of the SMC and Western North Carolina football than I do. My question is, why does Murphy not count 1970 as a State Championship?

From 1961 through 1971, play did not culminate in a state champion in all classifications. There were regional championships, or by Eastern and Western champions , that was as far as a team could advance. 2A : 1970 East: Ahoskie 28, Greensboro Allen Jay 12 West: Murphy 20, Catawba Bandys 8

1968 West winner was Mount Airy and West runner up in 1969. Both were in 3A .

Thanks for all the info. So what year did all classes start a "state" game? And did any classes have state games before they all started having them? I know Murphy and Swain were 2a for example. Andrew's, rville and Hayesville were all 1a. For example did 1a start an east vs west game before the 2a or 3a?

Looks like from 1913 Raleigh 29 Washington 0 thru 1928 there was just one championship for the whole state. 1918 was canceled due to a flu epidemic and there was one OT ( the two teams had to agree to play OT) Asheville 12 New Bern 6...1929 started two divisions A & B two championships...1941 started AA , A & B...1950 1A - 2A - 3A....1959 4A was added...4A since 1959 has had one championship...3A 1961-66 Region 1 & 2 , 1967-71 East & West, one championship started in 1972....2A 1961& 62 Region 1, 2 & 3 three championships, 1963-66 Region 1 ,2, 3 & 4, 1967-71 East & West, one championship started in1972....1A 1961-65 R 1, 2,3 & 4 , 1966 R 1,2 & 3, 1967 East & West , one championship started in 1968....1A started the A & AA in 2001 the others in 2002.

Now if I missed counted don't no from one of these schools get mad but from what I counted from 1913-2018.. Andrews won 1 championship in 1958 + a Region 4 '64 & R 3 '66.. Murphy 9 championship first one in '74 in 2A plus West in'70... Robbinsville 13 championships 12 from 1969-83 including 5 in row '79-'83 plus one Region 4 in 1965 Rville 34 Harris ( Spruce Pine) 7...Swain 8 championships first one 2A 1979.... This years 2A champ Reidsville 17 championships 10 in the 1930's & 40's.
