Mike’s an idiot. Everyone knows the match-ups get better as bowl season progresses. Bowl season is always front-loaded with horse crap.
Unfortunately, we live in a society of Mikes. Common sense and reason are verboten and evil - lest they interfere with some milquetoast's feelings (because, obviously, Words Matter, but basic common sense, intelligence, and the ability to engage at an assumptive IQ level above 80 do not).

Due to the protocols not the virus. Sounds like California effed it up. Should have been done testing Sunday unless symptomatic

not so sure, I've seen reports that it was UCLA and they only had 3 healthy DL.

I would imagine, without even looking at their roster, that they had at least a 2-deep of healthy defensive linemen, probably more, since they play with a base 3 down defense.
In fact, I'd wager a hefty sum on it - without even double checking the roster.

Maybe it's not just the kids who tested positive for Covid - I would also be interested to know how many kids UCLA lost because they are in the transfer portal or prepping for the draft? Add in the additional Covid positive tests that aren't allowed to play, and they decided to bail. But assuming 85 on scholarship and 20 walk ons, you would think they should still be able to field a team.

I'm thinking this to be more the case. Teams who lost coaches or marquis players to the portal or NFL seem to be the one's cancelling .

The NCAA should establish some sort of stricter rule on the portal . Maybe certain months, i don't have the answers.

I've been watching Bowl games since the early sixties and right now they are at it's end unless something is changed.

Would not surprise me if chip Kelly was the one who pulled the plug due to having too many starters unavailable. Doesn't want any bad momentum by getting crushed. USC would take advantage in a hurry
