Is there any scenario Mark Pope isn’t the coach at Kentucky next year? I’ve never wanted someone to succeed more than this man. But he’s quickly showing he may not be up for this kind of a job.

Honestly, this very scenario is something that worried me with the whole FB coaching change. There was always a chance this may not work out and we need as much flexibility as possible if things go very south. I cannot see how we dump all the cash it took to change FB coaches and then do the same for basketball. I’d imagine it won’t matter how bad it goes, Pope will be back.
The only guy that saved this program, fans started to turn on him because he didnt randomly bench the Twins in the Wisconsin game. Im telling you, you can pinpoint a lot of this to missing out on 40-0, and the few years after where fans became livid that Cal couldn't give us Final4s at will. Then the divorce took form and he checked out, and in fairness his weaknesses started to show.
But we could have had another 5 to 10 years of putting teams on the floor that can compete, even if there were some head-scratching OOB plays.
This isn’t the early 1980s where you stick with Coach K. I mean it is pretty obvious at this point, Pope cannot land enough of the top tier players.
It is becoming very clear that despite having the resources, he couldn’t close the right players and there is nobody signed for next year. I don’t want Cal’s approach but damn Pope has to get some elite HS talent. If Collins/Stokes or whoever was a lock, they would have signed.
This era is not a 5 year rebuild like when you stuck with guys. Barnhart was lazy and wanted a personality he could control. Well he has completely screwed up 2 of his 3 chances to hire a MBB coach.

If he doesn’t make the tournament with the amount of money boosters paid, why does everyone think he gets another year? Kentucky spent top 3 in football money on a basketball team, that’s not change lying around kind of money. Boosters will be livid. You already see former players peed off.
I don’t think so this year unless it’s a worse collapse than what we are already witnessing. That being said, if the NIL numbers are anywhere near what people are claiming, the leash will be shorter because nobody is paying money for this product on the floor.
Any recruits we might have landed in bet are out now. Not after this. And its not just losing, players dont really care too much about that.. but they will get wind of Pope being in over his head and that will be the final thing that pushes them away.
I dont think this will last long. Pope is gonna be stuck with another ho-hum roster next year and that will be it.
If the dude doesn’t beat a single team with a pulse, a man manages to lose 15 to 20 games who knows
I love pope the person but man he is out of his league here. I’ll get killed but said it when it happened, Bruce Pearl guys. He can coach and yeah he has a past but who else is going to take this job??? And yes, pope will be here 1 more year to fix it would be my guess.

He'll get one more year. His first year being the reason why. He needs to go back to recruiting shooters and using UK's brand and NIL to get ones who are two tiers above the talent he was able to get at BYU. Seems simple enough.
Stoops was fired because of an epic collapse at the end of the season. I would assume a worse collapse is necessary for Pope to be fired after year 2.
Short of a scandal (e.g., FBI probe into player gambling and throwing games), I don't see Pope getting replaced any time before the 2027-2028 season. I suppose there is the off-chance he resigns, but that would also take a monumental collapse.

Pearl at UK would have been like reliving the 1990's Pitino teams.
No way! Kentucky is basketball. They suck, Pope is bad but we will be great again. Look at the history. Football has no history except for some participation bowls and a couple ten win seasons in a down SEC

Yep I called this ahead of time. We just couldn’t wait….now we are super pumped to have a coordinator that dinks and dunks on every play as our head coach because they are friends with people at KSR. Yay! Now we’re stuck even if Pope goes Kenny Payne the rest of the way. Sad.

I’ve said before and I’ll keep saying it, this Pope situation is different, he won’t need to be fired, he will resign and walk away when he decides he isn’t the right man for the job.
