We may not have Ed Oliver but the basic fundamentals of how Houston defended P and LJ last night are what need to be taken away from that game.

Cougars defended the read well, beyond just having a top 10 draft pick DL.

There's been no secret to what UL has been doing on offense. It's rather elementary. They live and die by LJ.

You have to stop the cards early because they are a momentum and rhythm offense. They are accustomed to exploding out of the gates, and LJ really feeds off the energy and confidence of early success.

The defense has to be disciplined and not over pursue LJ. He's going to win any race or chase. On the read plays you have to have somebody committed to LJ no matter what. On passing plays you can't just bull rush because he can slip away, you need to also contain the possible scramble.

Mix up the blitzes and coverage because LJ has gotten by mainly on speed and athleticism. The game plan UL has on offense is not extremely mental. Bolt if the DE/DL crashes on the read hand off, Bolt if you're not comfortable after you first maybe second option isn't there in the passing game.

This is it for the Elliot and Stoops D. We all know what's coming, and we all have a season's worth of tape to see what works and doesn't work.

D has to get stops and make plays early and often because we do not have a shootout offense, and even if we did we would not have one that can out shoot Sneaky P.

The strategy needs to be pretty simple. Run the ball a lot keeping Jackson off the field. Bring in an additional DB to play LB and spy Jackson the whole game. His only job is to be Jackson's shadow.
And obviously run trick plays as they seem to work.

I agree on defense but Houston only ran the ball for 64 yards. UK needs UL to have 3 turnovers and 15 penalties again.

Biggest key is containing Jackson, make them beat us by passing the ball and running with Ratliff.

Not many defenses have been able to consistently execute the plan. Houston has a very good defense with key components at DL and elsewhere to execute what is required to disrupt. UL's offense has also struggled twice in highly charged venues. We will not get that advantage.

D needs speed to keep putting on the pressure. May want to leave Elam on the bench and go with quickness. But just don't see us putting that much together to have the same effect.
