sounds like they already were :0lets hope they dont boycott.
well, i cant help but feel that they may boycott even more. I really cant believe that they did it.sounds like they already were :0
Not a student but it's absurd. There are what, 10 home games left before this student graduates? And now you create a mini-PR crisis over something silly that may alienate other students around her?
This has been going on for years, and now, NOW, they choose to do something about it? Beyond all of the other sides of this that have been discussed ad nauseam already, they're taking a molehill and turning it into a mountain.
From the NU Hoops Website:
“Guest Conduct
Northwestern Wildcats basketball should be an enjoyable experience for all fans. In order to promote athletic excellence and fan enjoyment, we ask for your assistance in displaying a high degree of respect and sportsmanship at all times. If a patron displays conduct which endangers or disrupts players, coaches, officials, or other patrons, Northwestern University reserves the right to remove the individual from Welsh-Ryan Arena. No refunds will be granted in such cases.”
I appreciate her enthusiasm, sounds like she's a genuinely upbeat person and not just trying to make a spectacle. That said, if it was ear piercing on TV I can only imagine what it's like for people near her in the stands. I'm not an old fogey but I struggle with loud, piercing sounds as I'm sure some others do as well. Like nails on a blackboard so personally I'm ok with it.
Maybe they can have a sit-in at the Bursar's Office.lets hope they dont boycott.
C'mon. Fans do all sorts of things to "disrupt" opposing players and coaches. That provision is for people who go onto the floor, make contact with participants, or otherwise trespass on the game. They're not throwing this girl out; they sat down with her in a private meeting and asked her not to scream.
The fact that this woman has a nickname and is notorious and has had articles written about her constant B movie shrieking pretty much says it all.
But OK. You've raised a fair point. A point I’m sure you can back up with examples. So in all your years of fandom, just name one NU fan who has been more disruptive to other fans’ enjoyment of the game than her.
This provision in the NU policy is not just for people running onto the floor. It’s for drunks who vomit on others in the stands. Who smoke pot on the sly. People who swear and start fights in the stands. Back in the day, streakers. Political protesters. All sorts of stuff. And yes, people who are human air-raid sirens on steroids like her.
Is there no difference between the things you've listed and someone who...makes noise at a sporting event? They pumped in crowd noise last night over the PA system because it was so quiet in there. And we're publicly flogging one person who actually made noise and riled things up.
I guess we should eject all the kids on winter break camp day or whatever that is. The sounds emanating from the rugrats are far worse.
Ultimately, my point was, this individual has 7 weeks left in her undergrad tenure in the student section, and now they're sanctioning her, creating some bad press and sour tastes in the meantime. Silly.
Agreed, literally the Hitler of Northwestern basketball. So I’ll take that as tacit acknowledgment that there’s never been a fan as obnoxious or disruptive to other fans’ experience. Fair enough.
You say it’s silly to make her stop now, given that she’s only got 7 weeks left.
That shriek has been a verbal fart in our 7,000 person elevator for 3 1/2 years. So I say it’s long overdue that they told her to zip it.
lets hope they dont boycott.

Honestly, from the middle of the upper deck, I rarely heard her inside. I actually heard her a bit more at Allstate last year because that place was so empty. Perhaps others have had different experiences.
Charcat, I could not think of a better way to empty Welsh Ryan. I just hope the discussion can now turn back to the team and how we can make something of this season. Go ‘Cats. The NU administration tolerates disruption of campus speakers, protesters that prevent athletic groundbreaking ceremonies, and bullying of open discussion of issues on campus.
But cheering too loudly at basketball games, that is unacceptable! The screamer seems to have responded with grace and good sense, despite the Athletic Department's foolish overreach.
If the students want to protest this stupid decision, I would suggest a 20 new "Screamers" show up for the Indiana game and give it their best. Maybe this can become a new thing to put NU on the map, like the Blackhawk crowds screaming through the National Anthem. Perhaps she will start a movement! And the living dead from the donor sections will come alive!
The rich donors that don't show up for half the games have spoken. Not a student but it's absurd. There are what, 10 home games left before this student graduates? And now you create a mini-PR crisis over something silly that may alienate other students around her?

Are all these people bitching about her sitting by her at the game or is their experience degraded on their 60 inch HD TV?Charcat, I could not think of a better way to empty Welsh Ryan. I just hope the discussion can now turn back to the team and how we can make something of this season. Go ‘Cats.
Today in the Trib. (front page) it seems that the complaints came from Illinois fans and the TV and radio people. I'd say screw you illini. folks and maybe a little less from the TV commentators would be a good thing.Dumb Dumb Dumb. Can’t get students to go and we silence the one that attends every game. I wish Emily called their bluff and kept it up. Like you, in the upper deck she certainly hasn’t tainted my experience at the games. Way more noticeable last year. This is purely to accommodate the networks. If it bothers other teams great. Have any NU players complained about her? Highly doubt it. She is in the student section and if the “regular” fan sections made any noise at all they wouldn’t hear her over their own voices.
