This girl I graduated high school with has gone viral with her "I am content with my body" facebook post. Of course, tons of people are ripping her and trying to shame her body and just as many are rallying the "you go girl."

With 2 daughters I obviously am interested in the phenomenon of body ideals and psychological bullying. As a man, I obviously don't understand the intricacies of modern body shaming. I just want to be healthy, maybe have a little bigger pecs and arms and a little smaller gut. Don't give 2 ***** about what society says about my gams.

Do you think we'll ever reach the point as a society where being healthy is more important than having non pointy elbows?

The body positivity thing is ok until it conflicts with basic concepts of health. "Health at every size" (HAES) is a lie that fat people are buying into. There are studies saying fat people can be sort-of-healthy but they are like the old studies that said smoking was fine.

My wife knows this girl from high school. She was always popular. It's just such a "please give me these compliments and empower me" charade. You know what people who feel confident about their body do?

Looks are always going to rank way up there, and Society's current direction doesn't look like it's going to change that. Seems like guys only care if a chick digs them, whereas girls get the double-whammy of wanting approval from (a LOT of) the guys AND (a LOT of the) girls. That turns it into a mental issue, as much as it is physical.

Traditionally it has been an important part of American culture to let fat people know that they are fat and to judge them fiercely when you encounter them ordering fast food. Especially the ones that order 5 cheeseburgers and a diet coke.

I see nothing wrong with the occasional "Hey, you fat bastard stop ordering pizza" so long as you do it tactfully and with the intent on helping that person realize they are a fat slob who is quickly becoming utterly useless to society. The fat is there for a purpose. It tells the world you are open, ready, and willing to accept the scorn that comes with it. Kind of like hanging out a shingle that says "help me control myself, please." When you insult them, you are showing you care.
