How good do you think Gunnar Hoak can be?

I'm thinking he may have the most potential of any QB we've had in a while.

I thought he looked good in the spring game. I'm not predicting Tim Couch-like greatness for Hoak, but I think he can be pretty solid. Assuming we keep Clark in the fold for 2017 and Williams for 2018, I think our QB rotation will be in great shape going forward.

He looked very talented in the open practice. Threw a nice ball. Timing was his issue then. Just speed of the game it seemed.

Just a little info Williams is having a very good year this year, both running and throwing the ball. The down side of that is watch out for Auburn with him. But he is looking very good.

Never saw him. If Barker is able to return. We will have four quarterbacks....assuming everyone committed comes and stays. Could create some fine competition, but a lot of fan handwringing.

If Barker can no longer play I think Hoak will start first game next year. They like him so much they won't bust his redshirt this year.

So have we not learned from this stretch of games that a read-option QB and a run-oriented attack is our best chance for success in the SEC? Does anyone really think that this offense won't change dramatically once we switch QB's? We'll decrease our carries out of the wildcat formation and we'll start going back to the Drew Barker, Pat Towles passing oriented offense that has worked so well for us in the past

This is the hardest question for the QB spot. If we're going to play read option...we need a QB that can actually be a run threat. It was silly to watch Towles/Barker run read option and never keep it.

Gunner: From what I saw of him during spring game he has size and arm. Think there is a major reason staff kept his red-shirt on. Be great for Gunner if we get a bowl bid!
I don't have a good feeling on Drew Barker playing again.

i feel like Gunner has some great potential. We shall see.
Why do you feel like that? Where does that feeling come from? Do you observe practices? Hopefully, he has a bright future, but how can anyone know right now?

Based on what?
More potential than Towles or Barker?

Just a pet peeve of mine but nobody has any idea how any kid will transition from high school to college football. Why set expectations when you have no data from which to set them?

The only high school QB's I get excited about are the ones that throw timing routes, and aren't the biggest kid on the field. It shows they are accurate and can read what's in front of them.
Not bashing Towles, but I watched him play at Boyle County his SR. year and remember all the hype around him. I walked away from that game very unimpressed. He was the biggest kid on the field by far, and had days if not weeks to throw, it seemed like all his passes that night were 40-50 yard bomb jump balls. His stats passing and rushing were absolutely gaudy, but why wouldn't they be.

I don't see how anyone can offer anything other than pure speculation to that question. Let's see how things go in the spring. He will likely be in the thick of it.

Ironically, had the Cats lost early (e.g., SC or Vandy) they may have been "forced" to try Gunnar in an attempt to salvage the season. But, ugly or not, they won 3 close ones with Johnson and you don't mess with success. Another spring ball QB derby is shaping up. Getting to be something of a spring tradition in Lexington.
