How good is Tate Sage?

Good enough to be playing more minutes.
Tate has appeared in all 18 games for Iowa (13-5).

The true freshman Sage appears to be getting all of the senior Hausen's possible minutes. In the preseason I didn't see that happening.
He doesn't play like a true freshman for sure.
I don't understand Thompson Fr not playing at all. Is he that green. In this day and age,it will be rare to keep a player 4 years. If they have NBA potential and show it,they are gone. Or will bolt in the portal.
I am guessing he agreed to reclassify knowing he would redshirt. Otherwise he will bolt for the portal.
This is one of the main reasons that Hausen doesn't get PT. Tate is playing that well at both ends of the floor.
As for Trey, I dont' think anyone anticipated him missing the whole summer finishing classes (JMO). Mac has mentioned how hard it was for him to have to sit the summer, then try to play catch up with everyone. With as much of an emphasis as Mac places on D this was an extremely tall task for him to get caught up in such a short amount of time.
Having said that, he has mentioned that if this is what his path is, then this is what he needs to do. I'm personally lookingo forward to watching him run roughshod over th B10 next season!

Trey also realized spending a year at Iowa (be it playing or redshirting) would develop his game more than playing his senior year of HS.
Also, Ben won't play guys unless they can play to his standards on both ends of the court. Trey had a long way to go in playing team defense.... as you noted, missing out on summer workouts put him behind everyone else.
Simply put, Tate has moxie. He doesn't appear nervous at all. Seems to love competing. Very pleasant surprise so far.

Saw the group of Stirtz/Combs/Sage/Banks/Manyawu at multiple points vs Indiana. I'd like to see what their season-long +/- would be compared to other groups.
Very good observation. I was wondering about just Cam M’s +\-. He does everything. Perimeter defense, if needed, tough rebounds, blocked shots, dunks, good free throw shooting. And he is a leader-I see him directing others on both sides of the court. I think things run smoother when he’s on the court.
I think it was said his defense wasn't good enough yet and coaches wanted a redshirt year to work on that.
I checked the Hawk website to look for +/- and I don't see accumulative numbers for that. However, you can hit the "Box Score(PDF)" button on each game completed on the schedule to see each player's +/- etc. For the Indy game, Cam had a +16.
Sports Reference has his BPM as 9.4 for the season. Interestingly, 3.8 last year at Drake.
Tate Sage spoke at the women's game tonight. I think he is a solid player. He was with Thompson.
How was he so under the radar? Dude is skilled.
He flew under the radar because he didn't put up huge numbers while playing on a team with 4(?) D1 football and basketball kids lol
Mac has said that's why his skillset would translate to this level because he didn't have to score a bunch to impact games. We're seeing that play out in real life right now!

He also plays very calmly for a Freshman. He's got a great looking jumper, and seems while not a great athlete a pretty darn good one. Kid has a nice future in front of him in my opinion.
I disagree. I think he has exceptional athleticism and that we just haven’t seen anything but the tip of the iceberg. The kid can definitely get up. Howard too.
I'd say he's pretty damn good. He needs more minutes, and Alvaro needs fewer, IMHO.
Most guys would like to be "not a great athlete" the way Tate Sage is.
He definitely does not play nervous or timid, unfortunately a common trait (IMHO) for some past Iowa players when playing on any kind of big stage/pressure situation. I do feel that when we do make the Big Dance that Ben has theses kids coached so well, nerves will never come into play…

Tate, Thompson, Coop, Cam, Alvaro, Kael, Isaia, Trevin gives you a good base of guys that know the system and Ben's expectations. Add in Ethan ...and a PG??? to be named???? Others???
He is sneaky athletic. A good offensive player, but has been really good defensively. He moves his feet well for his length.
Agree. Jirak in my opinion is a long ways from truly contributing. He needs to really keep transforming his body in the offseason. He’s got some nice skills but he is slow and needs to get much quicker to defend anyone. McCollum has always won with really good guard play so bringing in another pt guard is obviously number 1 priority for this team.
Tate Sage reminds me of the guy on the other team that doesn't pretty much everything well. Some highlight plays, few mistakes, tough, smart. I always hated it when that guy was on the floor for the other team.

Only the "stick" Vidnovic weighed about 160. But I can still kinda see the comparison.
watching him play tonight, I'd say he's not too shabby
