How many scholarships do we have next year?

Only seniors who would have exhausted their eligibility can return next season and not count against the scholarship limit, and we don't have any of those. So we will have 13 scholarship players: the 10 we have currently and the 3 incoming freshmen, pending any transfers.

(This is my best understanding of the situation, which is confusing, so I may be wrong)

Interesting... so it's unfortunate that Anthony Gaines' past medical redshirt hurts us here, assuming he returns. If he was a true senior he could come back without counting against the scholarship limit. But because he had a past redshirt, he can come back (if invited back) but would count against the 13 limit. Feels like something NU should appeal ;)

As many have mentioned - if we get a stud recruit *cough* *Patrick Baldwin, Jr.* then the university has fulfilled it's four year commitment to Anthony, and I believe he'd have the choice to make, whether to A) graduate and enter the real world, B) grad transfer and continue to play elsewhere, or C) make the (unlikely) decision to start grad school and return as a non-scholarship player. Correct me if I'm wrong on that.

Yeah, but he also has an extra year of eligibility coming, so he can play all the way into 2022-23 if he wants.

It's possible that the returning-senior rule only applies to fall sports, as I can't find language specifically including winter sports in the rule. But either way, it doesn't affect NU men's basketball.

In either case, we are going to see a truly ridiculous number of players transferring all over D1, either next offseason if the returning-senior rule applies to basketball or this offseason if it doesn't.
