I'm not sure, but off the top of my head, a 1 seed has won the NCAA in 2013, 2012, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007, 2005, 2002, 2001, 2000, 1999, 1996, 1995, 1994, 1993, 1992, 1990. So that is 16 times since 1990.

Not often. 2012 and 2009 I'm aware of. Maybe a few others.

2013 UL, 2012 UK, 2009 UNC, 2007 FL. They did not start using that until 2004 though, when UK was the top 1 and infamously lost to UAB in the 2nd round.

In 2005 Illinois was it, 2006 was Duke, 2008 was UNC maybe?, 2010 was KU, 2011 was OSU, 2014 was FL.

So 4/11 seasons if my pathetic math is right.

I think it is, and 2005, 2008 and 2014 made final four. 2011 was screwed over by seeding.

So not very often the no 1 overall seed wins the ncaa, sounds like less than 1/3 of the time. I will google it to see what I can find

22 teams that was ranked the no 1 team at the start of tournament in at least one poll has won the ncaa title since 1949. So it appears that only 1/3 of teams that is favored to win the title actually wins it. Not good odds.

3 of the last 4 times UK won the tournament, they entered as the favorite. And that's 3 of only (maybe) 4 times that UK would have been the pre-tournament betting favorite in the last 40 years. UK was not the favorite in 84 (UNC was), 93 (at least I don't think they were, but UK, IU, Michigan, and UNC were very closely bunched that year), 97 (Kansas was), 2004 (pretty sure it was Duke), or 2010 (Kansas again). I think they were in 2003, but even that year, it might have been Arizona.

Anyway, being the favorite, regardless of how it has worked out in general historical terms, has not been bad thing for UK.
