Is America far and away number one?

Have other nations closed the gap significantly?

I'm not a warmonger, but a buddy of mine is.

He says the USA is losing ground in the arms race.

True or not?

Size: China
most powerful: US followed by Russia

I think China is catching up in power and technology.

As far as discipline and physical status of the combat forces we are lagging behind several countries with our overall regular troops. But, we make that up in technological weaponry.

Not considered the best in some rankings. Below is rankings for 2020 and other rankings has them lower. The SAS has always been around the top as have the Seals in most rankings..

  1. SAS – United Kingdom.
  2. Navy SEALs – The United States. ...
  3. Shayetet 13 – Israel. ...
  4. Alpha Group – Russia. ...
  5. Delta Force – USA. ...
  6. Special Air Service Regiment – Australia. ...
  7. Sayeret Matkal – Israel. ...
  8. JW GROM – Poland. ...

Edit: I have read some articles about the Sayeret Matkal before and they get a nod in a few articles as one of the best as well.

Considering that we have more aircraft carriers than the rest of the world combined, I'm going with us by a long shot. But I really don't have a clue, I'm just a fan, not a player.

Something not taken into account is that the U.S. has by far the most experienced first world military on the planet. Literally millions of American soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines have had full combat tours, over a million with more than one, since 2002 [some date all the way back to Desert Storm as well]. No amount of training can replace that experience in combat, mass logistics, medical expertise during war, etc.

For all the talk about special forces [and BTW, Delta IMO would be number one with a bullet] there is no comparison between the training and experience of the regular U.S. combat troop and the rest of the world.

This is not a comment on who is the best, just a general comment. Part of my tour was at Danang. Several branches and countries had responsibility for security on different sections of the perimeter. The Vietnamese were more scared of the Aussies and Koreans than anybody. Part of that was they didn't have the same rules as we did. I saw the Koreans do some really nasty stuff that would be on primetime news for a few months here if Americans had done it. It was a nothing burger for them.

We are still number one but the lead over Russia and China has disintegrated. We have certain constraints such as acquisition regulations, intellectual property, competition requirements, funding appropriations etc. that has stifled our innovation. Thankfully DoD leadership and Congressional budgets have flexed in recent years to prioritize next gen technologies and innovation in order to push a technological advantage. Some of our best intentions to support the industrial base and ensure fairness makes it a challenge to stay ahead of China who effectively does whatever they want and makes serious pushes to steal our technologies.

We have the preeminent military with by far the most experience. We have the best technology. But we have some terrible generals that get promoted not by excellent work, but by simple longevity and *** kissing and brown nosing.

People who decide strategy left us in an impossible situation in 04. Strict ROE in 2011 got a lot of great warriors killed. There's a huge disconnect between an always changing situation on the ground and some ******** sitting in an air conditioned room. We are very lacking in our ability to learn from mistakes.

Finally, with nukes the only warfighting will be nation building and limited war. It's almost impossible to win wars like that. The enemy just blends in, sporadically attacks, and waits you out. In a purely conventional war without nukes we'll **** you up though, or die trying.

Edit- We do have some great allies too.

I was in charge of a security patrol one night when we got a call on the radio to see what the commotion was at a Korean marine security post. As we arrived, they were carrying someone on a stretcher to an ambulance. The screams coming from that person were unhuman primal animalistic sounds. They had caught a Vietnamese prostitute trying to sneak on base to make money.

For those not familiar with a slap flare, it's a metal tube you use at night for a better view of an area. You take it and point in the direction/height you want and slap the bottom. It lights up an area the size of two football fields like broad daylight for 2 or 3 minutes. They had taken a slap flare and stuck it up in her private parts and set it off. Imagine something like that inside you. I can still hear her screaming.

Jesus Christ. I've seen some aftermath of beheadings, tortured bodies left in a pile near Baqubah, and other typical warzone **** but what you just described is horrifying and made me squirm. I'll bet you can still hear it.

Any SF list that doesn't have Delta at #1 is highly suspect.

Had a buddy who flew some ROK generals and Colonels around. He saw them interrogate prisoners. First one wouldn't talk....they'd throw him out 1500 feet up. Next one would usually spill his guts

China isn’t close. They have more people-that’s it. Do they have decent technology? Yes, but we spend a crap-ton more and have 800 bases, all over the world. They don’t have anywhere near that.

Agreed. I'd ad the Brits as well.

yeah, but Aussies as a people and culture are more like us. They’ve got the same independent and patriotic spirit. Their country was built in a similar way in that it had a frontier and had to be explored. If young there now their small towns look like midwestern American small towns and their big cities are very similar. Hell they even have cowboys.

It's crazy you say that as just yesterday i watched a video about how similar both countries are from becoming a country to today. It became a country because the Brits sent their prisoners there, or to America. Those prisoners spread west just like we did. They do have that cowboy swagger that many of us have. They're brave warriors too. Never met an Aussie I didn't like.

Their country was also built with slave labor, except theirs was in the form of British prisoners and Indigenous populations from the outset. Once it stopped being a prison colony they started using Indians (from India, not Native Americans), Chinese, and Western Pacific Islanders and Micronesian Islanders.

Of course, slavery still exists in both countries in the form of forced labor in the prison industrial complex.

I said the exact same thing about it being built by prisoners and slaves.

After the USA of course being number one. And not talking elite (cause I wasn’t) but just regular military I’d say Korean. As a tanker stationed side by side with ROK soldiers in the 90’s those dudes were very disciplined and able. My son who’s currently a soldier said the Australian’s were the better out of the ones he worked with and trained while deployed to Iraq and Kuwait in the last year. Said he couldn’t believe some of other countries utter lack of knowledge in basic soldiering.

If my Twitter feed is accurate, then according to the liberal media, American citizens are the largest military in the world.

Yeah they have to be #1. Delta is made up of the best of the best special forces soldiers and have a harder selection and training process than the other special forces

Which one is #1 is subjective, but everything I've read about special forces generally has the SAS at the top.
