Need to replace a furnace and AC. Only one estimate so far and it was $12k for Carrier. [sick] Is that about right? What about other brands? Any to recommend or avoid? Most of the dealers around here are Carrier, Trane, Amana, Bryant, Lennox.

I had to get a new carrier this spring. $10K but 5 years zero interest. And they said I was lucky it went out when it did because prices would go up later in the summer.

That sounds high. I got two (2) 95% efficient Lennox Furnaces plus a new 3.5 ton 16 SEER A/C unit for $13,300 this spring.

The quote was for Carrier:

Comfort 14 24ACC4
Performance 96 59TP6
=$12k

Comfort 16 24BC6
Infinity 96 59TN6
=$14k

My existing is 3 ton.

Also, I don't think I need 96 AFUE, but that was the quote.

I know plenty of people with multiple A/C units, but I've never seen a house with more than one furnace. Why do you have 2 furnaces?

My furnaces are twined. Each heats one side (left & right) of the house on the first two floors. A third furnace heats the 3rd floor which was unfinished space when the house was originally built in 1950.

Depending on what size your heat pump is. A price of 12,000.00 for just a new indoor & outdoor without new duct is way to high. I assume your duct is already installed. But a fair price on say a 5 ton unit would be something like 7,000.00. And of coarse a smaller unit would cost less. By all means get other prices.

If you have two ac's then you have two furnaces ( or air handler). Those air conditioners are hooked up to something inside.
Secondly, that quote is at least double what you should get a 3 ton change out for.

If your like me, a homeowner who could try but isn’t really qualified your in for an expense. Depending on where you live a painful one. Rent or own, it’s just one of the cost of owning.

Yeah, $12,000 for a 3 ton, you're getting ripped off.
He was quoted upper end carrier stuff. So those are about right, maybe a bit high. I wouldn't call it getting ripped off but certainly much cheaper options if that's his main priority. All these quotes are absolutely negotiable as well. We're used to it so might as well ask.

I really like that 59TP6 product and would suggest pairing it with the 14 Seer AC if you're sticking around the house for a few years.

*We see 2 coils on 1 furnace occasionally. Wouldn't recommend.
