I might need to have a new gas furnace installed.

Any recommendations on brands and Lexington area companies?

Any to avoid?

A/C is ancient also. Can you save money by doing everything at the same time or does it matter?

Thanks for any help.

If you have the money, replace the whole system. You will pay more upfront but less in the long run. I would recommend Carrier equipment. Cost more but very good quality and reliable.
I would get three estimates and the check with the BBB and google compaints.
If a company has multiple complaints against them, stay away! I would say double digits is way too many complaints. Good companies that won't rip you off shouldn't have any complaints.

You're gonna wanna ditch the gas furnace. Go with radiant floor heating with chilled beams and mini split heat pumps. Add a sunspace to the side of your house for some passive heating. You're gonna wanna reinsulate everything and replace all of your windows. Why pay for new HVAC when you're just conditioning the outside? And when your HVAC guy shows up to start the work, ask him if he has a sling psychrometer. If he says he doesn't, fire them immediately and threaten to call the cops when they aren't off your property within 10 seconds.

Don't go with Carrier. American's losing jobs because they decide to run to Mexico. Eff them.

Hello jamaliens, there are many brands of furnace but I would suggest you consult a good professional technician hvac service old bridge and seek advice from him regarding brands and size of HVAC as per your requirement.
