And we keep going deeper. Would Rick want to join Mark on the sidelines? The way Mark talks you’d definitely have to think he’d at least consider that offer if Rick made it.

On one hand, obviously, Pope is the guy who developed the whole system along with his assistants and enhanced it by that point and brought the players along and has their total trust by then. Otoh I don’t see how you could ask for a better “extra pair of eyes” or someone Mark trusts more himself to give extra insights and ideas live right in his ear as the action unfolds.

Also, and to keep this thread from becoming too much of a yelling contest between pro-Pitino and anti-Pitino, if he did do that, what would he say specifically? Little to say by that point in the season? Or Rick feeling the closest he’s felt to back in the saddle in thirty years and bubbling over with little tricks he’s been thinking about for Mark while falling asleep all season just on the off chance this happened? His offensive style here was great. And ballsy. But it was largely his defenses that were more subtle than they looked and tended to let him do more with less. What kind of ideas might he suggest, by then, based on what we think Pope will have both offensively and defensively? Other than “put a man in the ball!!” of course.

Sue me, I’d love to see it.

I don’t ever see that happening. Has anyone ever added a coach from another team to help? No. Never. I don’t even believe it would be possible. NCAA rules. You can’t just put an extra coach on your bench. Rules allow for a certain number.

I didn’t know that about him not being allowed on the bench. That makes sense. Thank you for being respectful.

No way in HELL would Pitino ever be an assistant coach. His ego wouldn't allow it.
Possibly. Or possibly it would be exactly his ego that would instead make him see it as him being the sage needed to lift his protégé to that level.

Obviously not possible anyway if the rules don’t allow it. But if we’re only talking about the motivation side of it… I don’t see how the ego thing’s supposed to be a barrier to him giving another man fatherly advice but not be a barrier to him attending another man’s Madness event. How would that work?

Rick isn’t my favorite person but if Pope hires him then ok. He could do worse, Cowl proved that, also it would drive Cowl bonkers (and his fan boys.). Your kinda talking me it to it. 😝

No way he’d be an assistant coach again IMO.

Maybe as a guest at practice, but not on the bench or probably the stands either.

I can't imagine his current employer would look fondly on that. I wouldn't if Pope did it.

Once he retires from St John's, I whole-heartedly believe he becomes some kind of special advisor to Pope to finish his career here.

an advisor would be a great role for him
i do not agree with his morals, but then again, we all have made mistakes, but his basketball mind is genius

Not on the sideline but I'm the crowd. He did that for his son when Richard had Minnesota in the NIT. He was yelling "Lob!" when the opponent was getting ready to throw one. Nolan Richardson did the same thing to us in the infamous UAB game.

This.

No way does Pitino ever become an assistant anywhere. I dont even think he'd agree to be an assistant for team USA in the olympics at this point.
Why do people keep framing this hypothetical as Rick “becoming an assistant”? That’s a weird take imo.

This was about Rick sitting next to Pope 1-3 games, whispering in his ear a few times after most of the work was already done, and then forever getting partial credit for another Kentucky title.

I’ve taken a lot of martial arts over the years and gotten a lot of advice from a lot of badasses. I guess I got real lucky all those dudes didn’t mind “being my assistant.”

Put an extra coach on your bench and you will get hammered and vacate wins. The NCAA can’t do anything to restrict players anymore. Coaches can still get hammered with show cause not allowing them to coach anywhere.

i don’t believe he will attend madness publicly. That would be coaching suicide. He is employed by St. John’s. He is in charge of recruiting players to that school. What kind of message are you sending to your recruits when you attend another prestigious universities marquee recruiting event. Rick is not going to hurt his own recruiting to help Pope. Do you guys think anything thru before posting??

Pro-Rick or anti-Rick doesn't really matter.

It doesn't make any sense.

1. Rick is still the coach at St. John's. It would look terrible for St. John's HC to be on another team's bench. It would be a bad look for Kentucky.

2. I don't think you can just up and invite anyone to come sit on your bench as an advisor/assistant. You have so many coaching roles. Even if you could, see above.

3. I think on some level, Pope wants to show the world he's the guy. Bringing in your old coach, who is older, more experienced, etc. really steals away from the credit you're due. Kalen DeBoer doesn't want Saban on the sideline.

This is a great idea. I think we should just add every good coach as they get knocked out of the tournament. Our coaching staff would need its own bench.

St. John's will be Pitino's last job. he will retire. if when he retires, Pope wants to bring him around as a Consultant or something to that affect, then fine.

On the sideline!? Absolutely not. And I doubt Pope would want that.

Now, will Pope potentially ask Rick for his opinion on a quick scouting report of the next team or bounce ideas on how to handle the prep and mental work w the 2 day, week, 2day turnaround , ? Maybe.

I have posted in multiple places to eat my crow. Only thing I told my wife is Rick is 70+. He said… Before I hang up coaching, I wanted to come back.
It was a huge middle finger to St. John’s , but I guess he said WTF, I’m retiring anyway. I’m gonna do it. Good for him.
I cheered for him very loud.

Rick would be on speed dial, not the bench. I don't believe Pitino would overshadow Pope in a scenario like that. He wouldn't do that to Pope. He'd be happy to continue basically being Pope's consultant. I just fine with that.

Probably wants to be fired so he can move back to Lexington maybe assistant coach a few years at worst he becomes the next Joe B and be at rupp and around our teams. He could fill Cals ambassador role
