I Admit To Being Confused...

I know a lot of this is based on the judgment of the officials but, I have a question about ball spots (and no, I'm not addressing a medical condition).

A player's forward progress is stopped and the whistle has blown ending the play. Is the ball supposed to be spotted where it actually is at the time his knee hits the ground or spotted where the knee hits the ground?

On virtually every spot, it seems the ball is questionably spotted a foot to almost a yard further behind than where the ball is actually located when the whistle blows causing fans to go crazy. I know I've gone crazy on many a spot.

Probably a stupid question but it won't be my last.

It should be spotted where the ball is when the knee (or elbow, or butt) hits the ground.

I agree and that's what I've always thought. But, so, so many seemed to be routinely errantly spotted and then confirmed by television replay.

Many a first down/score has been prevented. I guess spots are similar to questionable strikes in baseball.

You must have been watching the Ark/ T Tech game. The official marked a ball at the knee and was over turned in the booth. Home cooking for the SEC team didn't work on that spot...... Tech went on to score and win.
