Someone thought that they knew how to put this formula together and then didn't question the results.

No Prince song at all.

Michael Jackson only appears twice and one of those was a duet with McCartney.

Radio Airplay + Sales Data + Streaming Data = GREATEST OF ALL TIME HOT 100 SONGS
These all-time rankings are based on actual performance on the weekly Billboard Hot 100 (from its launch on Aug. 4, 1958 through Oct. 10, 2015) and Billboard 200 (from Aug. 17, 1963 — when we combined our two leading pop album album charts for stereo and mono releases into one all-encompassing weekly chart — through Oct. 10, 2015). Titles are ranked based on an inverse point system, with weeks at No. 1 earning the greatest value and weeks at lower rungs earning the least. Due to changes in chart methodology over the years, eras are weighted differently to account for chart turnover rates over various periods. Artists are ranked based on the combined point totals, as outlined above, of all their Hot 100 or Billboard 200 chart entries.”

Even "Song of the Year"s are rarely really the best song.

I think of them like the film Titanic. It certainly was not a great film, but had enormous commercial success.

It's most ardent constituency was teen and pre-teen girls.

wikipedia:

Upon its release on December 19, 1997, Titanic achieved critical and commercial success. Nominated for 14 Academy Awards, it tied All About Eve (1950) for the most Oscar nominations, and won 11, including the awards for Best Picture and Best Director, tying Ben-Hur (1959) for the most Oscars won by a single film. With an initial worldwide gross of over $1.84 billion, Titanic was the first film to reach the billion-dollar mark. It remained the highest-grossing film of all time until Cameron's Avatar surpassed it in 2010.

In 1967 "Winchester Cathedral" won best Grammy over the following:

1967 New Vaudeville Band "Winchester Cathedral" [4]
The Association "Cherish"
The Beach Boys "Good Vibrations"
The Beatles "Eleanor Rigby"
The Mamas & the Papas "Monday, Monday"
The Monkees "Last Train to Clarksville"

What do you expect, the Grammys are a joke as well, and lists like these are laughable. (I do like "I Gotta Feeling" by Black Eyed Peas though)

What is with all the post from people with 10 or less post today? Must be because school is out and the kiddies have nothing else to do.

That Debby Boone song was massive in the late 70s. I believe it spent longer at number 1 than any song previously.

I was surprised to find that it was a cover.

"You Light Up My Life" is a ballad written by Joseph "Joe" Brooks, and originally recorded by Kasey Cisyk for the soundtrack album to the 1977 film of the same name.[1] The song was lip synced in the film by its lead actress, Didi Conn. The best-known version of the song is a cover by Debby Boone, the daughter of singer Pat Boone. It held the #1 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for ten consecutive weeks in 1977, setting a new record for that time. She topped Record World magazine's Top 100 Singles Chart for a record of 13 weeks.[2]
