A coyote killed our cat last night. I am pissed and hurting. Damn coyotes. Blood trail leading from our sidewalk, down the street. A neighbor two doors down has lost 2 cats in the last 4 months. A calico by the name Kit Kat. My wife is destroyed. Sorry for the rant.

I fell for you. We lost a cat a few years ago to a great horned owl

Sorry to hear about your loss, but please don't do anything illegal (;)).

My understanding is that it's highly illegal to shoot a coyote in CA, so I wouldn't do that. And it makes too much noise.

I would go purchase some inexpensive ground beef, add some rat poison and then mix in some of your ex-cat's fur from around the house (not too much) into the mix. Set up a camera and then see what happens.

And the neighbor’s pets will eat the beef and poison and ML will be responsible.

The neighbor's pets shouldn't be outside between the hours of 11:00 pm and 4:00 am and they shouldn't be visiting. That's on them if they chose to do so.

Does notifying the CA dept of natural resources accomplish anything, would they actually try to track and kill the coyote?

Please accept my condolences.

Set a trap and put a bullet in the thing's skull. Throw its corpse in a field to be gnawed by vermin.

You'd be surprised how many cats I catch on camera at night. As a family with cats, it always concerns me. That said, the Coyotes here typically go for the fawns. Cleaned one up last year. Have at least three running around now. That's how many were bedded down in the yard yesterday when I got up.

Looked it up. Coyotes can be hunted in California. Do need an hunting license and to follow local restrictions. They are getting more brave. Neighbor said he saw 2 on our street in the middle of the day. A few months back.

Not sure about a 22. But a 22 mag certainly will. Dad nailed one trying to get into the barn. He had piglets at the time. Quite frankly that was much more humane than if the 600 lb sow or her equally large mom got a hold of it.
True that, I had family with pig farms, they’re no joke

So, 12 gauge, 22, what’s allowed in your neighborhood?
Crossbow with a 2 inch Rage broadhead in my hood. Quiet, accurate and deadly. Thats what one does to a turkey. After cutting off the feet.

A thought....it might not have been a coyote. Maybe a bobcat. We have them here too. I always thought, in a short sprint, Kit could out run a coyote, to our 7 foot fence. She leaps that fence in a heart beat. Neighbors said they heard what sounded like cat fight last night. Crap.

That bobcat info-share makes potential solutions to your problem even more difficult to ponder

From "https://wildlife.ca.gov/Conservation/Mammals/Bobcat" (California Department of Fish and Wildlife):

Laws and Regulations

Effective January 1, 2020, a bobcat hunting ban took effect in California. Trapping bobcats for their fur is also banned in California. Bobcats that are harassing or killing pets and livestock, may be taken by the landowner or agent under the authority of a depredation permit issued by CDFW. Below are some, but not all Fish and Game Code (FGC) laws and Title 14 California Code of Regulations (CCR) relevant to bobcats.

You know i'm not trying to call you out, i'm trying to call you up when I ask, "If you love the cat so much and will mourn it's violent passing, WHY do you let it be an outdoor cat?" This was obviously one of many terrible scenarios that can happen when you place an animal in an unpredictable environment and I know you knew this ahead of time. Sure, I can appreciate the philosophy of freedom, but I can not side with your view that a domesticated cat should be a hybrid. Especially NOT when they aren't the alpha predator in that environs. In theory it's all well and good, but this isn't a "human" that needs to go off and become independent like a child you love needs to in terms of their development i.e. college where you are expected to lose control of their safety as the parent. I'm arguing that a domesticated cat lives a perfectly adequate life indoors and it being introduced to the wild has minimal upside in terms of quality of life. My cat may be less "free," but the odds of her being attacked by a wild animal, hit by a car, terrorized by by the neighbor kid, poisoned, etc, etc is ZERO. Zero. When I love something, I personally do what I can to ensure it's safety and quality of life. Do I wish my little girl cat could experience the "thrill of catching a real mouse?" Sure, personally, I (selfishly perhaps you feel?) keep her inside so while she probably won't ever get the real rodent, she gets plenty of exercise inside, she loves to play with her realistic toys that get her amped up, she always has a warm/cool place to be, and if an animal that was dangerous some how by the grace of God got in to my residence, at least I would be able to kill it with my bare hands. I guess i'm a control freak and maybe that makes me in the wrong here, but I just could never let her outside by herself. She's like the little girl I never had. At the end of the day, it's a free country and I support you doing what you want to do, I just felt an urge to cut in and speak my side and look forward to yours and other"s thoughts-I know thousands of cats across the country are hybrids....cheers.

Probably 10 years ago Kit Kat picked us. She hung out by our truck, out front. Was told a family on our block sold their house and left her behind. She was a very independant cat. When she was younger she was a big mouser. Spent many nights out all night, back then. Came in to be fed and back out during the day. As she aged she started spending more time sleeping inside. She only trusted my wife and I. Would disappear during Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner, when family came over. Until recently our neighborhood has been safe. Suddenly there has been more coyote activity. Usually she is in by 10pm. Sleeping in a hid away or on our bed, on my wife. Last night we thought she was in but she wasn't. We have 2 other cats and a dog. Buddy is 22. Running on his last legs. He picked us too. Bohdi is 4. My son's cat. Black as the night. I found him as an abandoned kitten. Jack is a pug mix. Picture a pug with a dachshund body. Hard to do, right. Well, we are going to be much safer with our pets in this neighborhood going forward. We live in a community of about 400 houses but out in the country. Nature, it appears, is moving in.

I don't know what it was. We have many more coyotes here. But we do have bobcat, too. Even mountain lion. I think a bobcat is more likely to catch Kit then a coyote. Thanks for the info. Got my Phil Steele magazine. Getting ready for the season.

You can kill a coyote here in NC 7 days A week 365 days a year, A cross bow is very handy. As other posters have stated though, with a blood trail it sounds more like a bob cat. Sorry for the ops loss. I love my cats, but there very indifferent towards me !!!
