I never watch the NBA. How long has Cleveland been “THE LAND”?

About as long as Pittsburgh has been "The Burgh".

Seriously? I get out a little bit and had never seen THE. LAND. o_O . Then I saw an NBA game on at a restaurant last night. There it was.

“We landed on the moon!”

"The Lad"

Portsmouth is "The Mouth"

Boston is "The Ton"

Newark is "The Ark".

Of course, Kansas City is "The Kan".

You need to get out more.

To be clear:

Newark, NJ is The “Irk”.

Newark, DE is The Ark.

Pronunciation matters.

I don't know how long Cleveland has been 'The Land' (I'd guess its recent given I'm from Western PA and have never, ever heard Cleveland referred to as 'The Land') but it's a popular nicknaming convention these days - Riverbend Club near my house has 'The Bend' hats and gear, same for some other places (friend of mine is from Litchfield, CT and has a hat that says 'LIT').

Is state college the ledge? Or collage or leg or.

Of course my high school letterman coat says SC.
